Using a Drill with an adapter questions and opinions
#1
I have a Milwaukee 18V brushless so I am set with the drill. now the hard part I have used one with the clam adapter plate and it seamed to work real well. I am looking to purchase the nils augers in 4 1/2 and 6. Is there any benefit to using the Clam Adapter plate? Or should I just use the Nils?

Thanks
Matt

From what I can tell, the Clam adapter helps with the torque on your wrist as you drill and finally punch through the ice. The final punch through is where I have to be careful not to tweak my wrist. I need one of those Clam adapter plates.

I have the same drill, and I use without the plate on both an 8" NILS, and a Kdrill with absolutely no issues. [reply][/reply]

I have used an 18v with a 6 inch for years and it gets the job done.
I do use a Frisbee on the shaft to keep it from dropping through the ice.

As I understand it, If you use the adapter plate and you need to use your drill for other things, its a pain. If you dedicate the drill to the ice adapter, it's great.

Run it at low speed and use your body instead of your wrist to absorb the kick. Left handers can work that real well.

I never thought I would move away from the NILS as it is an awesome auger, but I like the kdrill better. It's lighter, blades are sharpened free for life, and extra blades are only $40. Flotation is integrated into the auger so you won't lose it, and re-opening old holes is not an issue with the kdrill. Once again, either is a great auger, but for me, the kdrill wins out... Hands down.

With the new clam plate you do not have to take the chuck off, so if the drill is double duty you just have to remove it from the plate.

If you don't have to take the chuck off, that sounds like a winner. I guess I was just familiar with the old style. Oh well ....... I'm an old guy.

I purchaces the new clam adapter, the changes are nice. You dont have to remove the chuck anymore your drill just tightens on. And i believe it has ball bearings to take some of the load off the drill, saving battery life for more holes. This is from the dick sporting goods site....

Despite being told otherwise, the Clam Auger Drill Plate Kit will not work with the Nils hand augers. I contacted Clam and they told me that unless I had a connection custom made by a machine shop that I would not be able to use my Nils hand auger blade with my newly purchased Clam Drill Plate. In researching options I lucked out and found the needed part on eBay for $31.45.
