Black Friday at the Berry ... 11/25/2016
#1
[#800000]I always have a hankering to fish somewhere the day after Thanksgiving. This year was no exception. A quick phone call to longtime friend Justin R. (JiggyJus10 on BFT) and he joined me and my 10 year old "fishing buddy" for a late fall trip to the Berry.[/#800000]

[#800000]I left my house at 4:30 AM and after a few pit stops along the 3 hour drive, we arrived at the Renegade marina at 7:30.[/#800000]

[#800000]With his blankie in hand and foot warmers in his boots, little Lee was ready to go![/#800000]

[#800000]It was a crisp 2° at the ramp. And nobody had driven on the ramp since the last snow storm.[/#800000]

[#800000]
[/#800000]
[#800000]The dock had been pulled out of the water so, after launching the boat, Justin had to climb in from the bank.[/#800000]

[#800000]We launched only to find that my motor had a frozen pee stream so we weren't going anywhere for a while. Since I knew that Curt (LuvThemCuts) was launching from the main marina today, I gave him a call to come give us a pull around the corner. While we were waiting there in the water by the ramp, we landed a couple cuts. That was a nice reward after having found out that we were stranded. Right about when Curt pulled up, I gave the motor another try and the pee stream freed up … we were on our way.[/#800000]

[#800000]I always love to see that cool fog on the lake that Strawberry is so famous for.[/#800000]

[#800000]We motored out to one of my favorite spots and ended up staying there the whole day. With our i-Pilot holding us steady the entire time, we enjoyed the beautiful outdoor scenery, watched bald eagles, and fished to our heart's content.[/#800000]

[#800000]After we had landed about 25-30 fish, Curt and company came back around. They had been out trolling but hadn't caught anything. We, on the other hand, were having a blast. A good heard of fish came through and we got so busy that the net was busy 100% of the time for about 20 minutes. [/#800000]

[#800000]Feeling kind of bad for Curt and his guys, we offered to put Justin on his boat and one of his guys on my boat for some hands-on training. Justin climbed into Curt's boat and a fellow by the name of Tim climbed into my boat.[/#800000]

[#800000]After using the right lure, some chub meat, plenty of ProCure, and some one-on-one coaching, Tim had the hang of it. He missed about 5 or 6 but managed 4 into the boat. It was his first time ever jigging for trout. I think he was pretty happy.[/#800000]

[#800000][/#800000]
[#800000]And over in Curt's boat, they were starting to land a few too.[/#800000]
[#800000]
[/#800000]
[#800000][inline "Curt's-Cut444.jpg"][/#800000]
[#800000]
[/#800000]
[#800000]Even though ending the day with about 35 fish in the boat wasn't "stellar", it sure was a really great day … one of my most enjoyable out on the lake.[/#800000]

[#800000]The entire day, we fished using 2½ inch Pearl Holographic Fresh Water Basics tubes with a 3/8 oz. jig head tipped with a piece of chub meat and slathered with Procure anchovy smelly jelly. We never really caught any casting. Most (if not all) came in vertical jigging just a few inches right off the bottom. Oh, and in the afternoon hours, 3/4 of the fish bite on the shady side of the boat (really, I promise!)[/#800000]

[#800000]Here's a short YouTube clip that Justin took. I got a kick out of watching it. You might too:[/#800000]

[#800000]https://youtu.be/EGPdwKHHSj8[/#800000]

[#800000]And just to top off the day, on our way home down the canyon, we were treated with watching a big ole moose running down the road next to us![/#800000]

[#800000]Thanks for joining me Justin. It is always fun to solve all the world's problems with you in 6 hours of drive time. And it was good seeing you again Curt. And Tim, like you say, "You can give a man a fish and feed him for a day, or you can teach him to fish and …….."[/#800000]

Thanks for an amazing day. I'd take having my line freeze, than be freezing in line on Black Friday (though the WD-40 was a really nice touch).

Mr Coot, I wish I had those foot warmers!! I saw you guys this morning at Renegade. I was in the blue toon trying not to get in your way. I hooked up a few with a white bugger and a few on a white tube right around the corner from the ramp. I saw you guys pulling in a few as I was headed in to warm up my boots around noon. Sure was a nice day...

You really are the fish whisperer... Thanks for showing Tim the ropes. You're reignited his love for fishing. He said that's the most fish he ever caught at one time. His only disappointment was not being able to take any home to eat 😋

What a great day it was !!! Thanks!!

Oh, man brother, I wish you would have been there. I just assumed you'd be out working your tail off somewhere.

I thought about you often ... especially when I was fishing with my 6-shooters!
