Ice on Mantua
#1
Drove up to Mantua today to check on the ice.. There was one fisherman out on the ice. He drilled holes all the way out. I did not walk out.. Guess it's time to get my gear out and head out.. [cool]

Thanks for the update! I hope search and rescue isn't needed, however! Anyway, great news on the ice. I wonder how thick it is.

Curious how this snow will affect the newly formed ice. It can't be that safe right now. Any bets someone falls in over the next couple of days?

I think you're right, I'll bet there's a good chance someone goes through... 1.5" of ice on my pond that froze the same night as Mantua... Probably not much more ice than that over there... If you go be prepared to get wet and self rescue... Derek we'll have to circle the wagons sometime this ice season... Later J

Snow piling up on thin ice isn't good. Insulates it from forming new ice. Plus it scares the hell out of me. Not seeing thin ice isn't good.

There was a guy out there fishing, good news...Did he keep lifting his arms up? That's when it's time to get your gear out and head out...just sayin.

Stopped over at about 2 today. Stood there on the shoreline in the rain. The edges were just slush and no good. Plenty of standing water on top of the ice that was there. Did not see a soul anywhere, if I did they would need their head checked.

So will it all melt away and we'll start over with some good ice? Or will all this water freeze and add the the thin layer?

I'd almost rather it start over. The forecast for the end of this coming week looks promising. But I'll take what we get and fish it when it's ready.

I'm thinking there might be a small layer left by the time the next freeze kicks in. So it should mostly be new ice, which I'm fine with. Now if we were having this conversation in January, i'd simply be too pissed to reply! [Smile]
