Enough water for 2017?
#1
Just poking around the forum. TubeDude, ya think we will have enough water this spring / summer to fill UL back up? Sure hope so, missed my annual Fathers Day trip to UL last year.
SkunkedAgain: I found a new profile photo to use for awhile, but maybe I should give it to you ? [Wink].

Hope everyone is staying warm, dry and safe this winter and ready to get back after the Cats in a few months.

[#0000FF]The last time UL filled to the brim was in 2012. The snow pack that winter was probably less than what we have...and will be getting...this year.

There is reason for optimism.

It's one of those things where a little bit more snow can make a lot of difference in the flow into Utah Lake. The key will be A. the final snow pack, B. the timing of the temperature rise that triggers the runoff and C. how hot it gets how fast. If there is enough gradual runoff to satisfy the upstream and downstream water users...with enough left over to raise Utah Lake...then we should see a rapid rise in May and June. That should mean plenty of water for Dad's Day.

Now what we have to see is how the combination of poor spawning and recruitment of white bass, the toxic algae bloom and sustained low water has affected the fish populations. I can predict that both white bass and walleye populations will be down. But the cats were plentiful late last year and should still be ready to rumble if you get out amongst 'em.

Let me know when you are planning a trip and I will see if I can lend some immoral support.

It looks very promising. I sure missed taking the boat to Utah Lake last year and want to make up for it this year.

Hopefully they will be able to utilize the extra storage capacity at Willard this year.

Get some good clear water in the fall to bring on a good boil season.

Nice Link!

Looks like most lakes should fill with this amount of snow pack. Can only hope the weather trend continues. Fish should thrive in most reservoirs if this pattern continues.

It would be great if the lake could come up and add a little depth to places like Battle Creek and the bubble up. I'm hopeful. If things don't pan out for that end of the lake I suppose I need to start spending time at Lincoln Beach.

[#0000FF]Yeah, the whole north end of the lake was too shallow to launch and fish last year...even from tubes. I like to hit the areas around Lindon, American Fork and over at the Knolls. Been a couple of years or more since there was worthwhile fishing there...even if you can launch.

If it wasn't for Lincoln Beach I would not have done any fishing last year at Utah Lake. It always treats me well but it is a much longer drive.

I have been monitoring the lake level and inflows to UL, since the gates where closed it has come up over a foot, the inflow to UL has been more than the out flow from DC since about the 8th of jan, need at least another foot to launch.

Hopefully by the first of march we can launch at LB, I got some new stuff to try from TD.

I seen they did a little work on the harbor ramp, they filled in the drop off on the north side couldn't see if they dug the rocks out from the end of it I hope so, the last time I was there the rocks at the dock ramp where still there.

We need some good rain in the valley to help get a jump on filling it up.

Up one foot in depth or up one foot of the sloping bank?

one foot in depth according to http://data.cuwcd.com/data/reservoirs/index.htm

in October the lake was almost at 7 ft below comp, today it is 5.6, this month it has been coming up good with all the snow, there is 139 cfs going into the lake today with all the snow melting,

I sure hope it continues to rise and it sure looks like that is exactly what is going to happen.

Yep, I'm seein' the same increase in water depth as you are MSM. The rocks by the first spring that fishermen were fishing from a month ago are now well under water. The water going into the lake from Benjamin Slough is higher now than it ever was last year. I say we're gonna have a good water year. I'm ready.

Good to see them drop some heavy gravel off the end of the ramp. That drop off was a pain in the butt for many last year.

There are still guys fishing the open water at the spring. Still lots of crappie and gills but few white bass. Also heard of a few northerns taken there.

Another month or so and it should be cattin' time. Can't wait.

If you want to have some fun, go check out this site:

https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrc...eprd341710

When you pull up the charts on the different drainages you'll see that most of them have snowpack very close to what is considered normal on April 1st if not more. Provo (if you look at Minor Basins) is about 10% above what is considered a normal snowpack for the entire water year and is very, very close to matching the record max as of today.

Looking at Alta's website, they already have had more snowfall than the entire season last year (298" v. 278" or something close to that) and the snow has been much wetter and heavier.

I don't think we'll be able to fill up Utah Lake and Lake Powell, but most of the reservoirs will be full to capacity pretty quickly. Hopefully Yuba gets all the way full.

Well MSM, you're getting a pretty decent thaw for early Feb.

I can already see a difference in the GSL. Coming off the Bountiful bench this AM, it appears that Antelope Island may actually be an Island once again. Strip of blue along the SE shore where it's been dry for quite some time. And that despite the breach in the causeway that was predicted to lower the southern portion's level.

Its looking good, even next week it will only be cool for a couple days then warming up. I go by the Spanish for river every day, it has been running high and muddy last couple days. pezvela says he only needs 6 more inches to launch, suspect ice sled and BLK will be fishing this week end.
