Question For Flaming Gorge Mackinaw Ice Fishermen
#1
[Smile] I'm getting ready to make my first trip to Flaming Gorge to specifically target macks through the ice. My auger is 10" in diameter. Is that a big enough hole to get a 25# fish up through or should I bring an 8" or 9" and drill 2 holes side by side and chip out the middle to make one big hole. Now, keep in mind, the very high probability is that I won't hook anything that big, but I sure plan on trying! Any other tips would also be appreciated.

Thanks.

Don

Depending on your auger, double or triple size your hole. The Gorge allows an 18" hole, so a triple 8" hole (triangle shape, using a chipping bar or axe on thinner ice to knock the middle out) works great. We double hole 10" augers by overlapping the holes. It's a little tricky keeping the 10" from wandering off but with a little practice it's a no brainer. We use the chipping bar or axe to knock the middle spurs out to form a 18" x 10" slot. Good Luck and I hope you pull a big fish thru the ice.
