Fish Lake 12-14
#1
Getting back from the trip to Fish Lake with my daughter.. Must say, I was worried about what ice conditions were going to be, edges, slush, thickness, leading up to the trip.. As we passed Koosherem and I saw the edges were pretty much melted away to 8-10 ft. in some spots I thought well, we will be spending a lot of time in the cabin..Lol.. to my relief as we started to drop down into fish lake and seen all the tents out there Sunday, knew we would be OK.. edges were fine, a few open spots of water by were the springs run into the lake.. a good solid 4-5 inches of good ice on bottom with about another 6 inches of white ice on top with a smidge of snow on top of that.. we had no slush the entire time we were there.. we targeted big fish in the mornings and perch in the afternoon to try and get her a tagged one and most important keep her attention span, she is only 7.. well, she got spoiled the first jig she put down the hole, while I was still getting my pole rigged up, she says I got one, I got one.. I looked over and her pole was bent to the hole, I adjusted her drag and told her to slow down and take her time.. as she got it close to the hole I seen it, seen it good, a nice big splake, I am saying about a 5-6 pounder.. she worked it a little more and as soon as I had a chance to grab it, I went for it, well at that point and time the hook popped out.. non the less to say, I was bummed.. the kid on the other hand, was just happy to have hooked a big fish and that made the entire trip right there for me.. she was as happy as could be.. other than that, we caught a good amount of nice bows and perch the rest of the trip.. we went out this morning before leaving and targeted perch, but must have been in a bow/perch feast.. it was either a perch or a nice bow one after another.. at one point she said she thought we were drifting away on the ice because her line wouldn't stop, lol.. and behold when she flipped the bell, a really nice bow had taken her jig on the way down.. must've had it for a while because there wasn't much line left on the reel.. all in all, it was a great trip.. gorgeous days on the lake without the well known fish lake winds in the afternoon! The only regret I have is I didn't take a snowmobile, this is on sore dad from packing a sled all over that lake and hauling it up the little side trails.. the ice was really talking this morning though, I even put an anchor in for the tent and I am use to the little crack noises, but this one popped and popped loud and I felt it under me, that got the blood going a little bit.. great time and she did a great job for being 7.. couldn't ask for a better Valentine's present than this weekend.. product review, I have on my big fish rod a cold gear inline, love it.. with that I have suffix ice braided line, love that.. on the other spin reels, I have the beaver damn line on there, it did pretty good, like it.. however on her pole I have the suffix ice line, non-braided, orange.. not a fan of it whatsoever.. memory is horrible on it..

What an awesome report, thanks for sharing such great details!! I have to say I have been on the ice there and had a similar experience with how loud the cracking noise can be, and the feeling you get when you feel the ice shaking. It seems the cracking noise will echo for a bit. It will definitely cause your butt cheeks to pucker up a bit. Thanks again!

Wow! Sounds like you had a great time. You motivate me to make the drive down to Fish Lake. Maybe on Presidents' Day. I'll try to re-catch that big splake for you.
