Thanks for the intel... some friends told me when they were there on Saturday the ice was still plenty thick but that the edges got pretty weak and slushy by the afternoon which made getting off the ice a little sketchy.

Please everyone - BE CAREFUL for sure!

do you know what part of the lake this happened on? the ice should still be thick but there are several springs that people need to avoid . basicly you need to keep your eyes open when riding a sled on a lake .

Report says north of Renegade Bay which is where I drilled a hole last Wednesday and ice was only 11 inches in one stop and 24 inches 3 feet away. Couple of fishing friends said that same hole yesterday was a big open water spot .

I was there with your friends and there is a current in that area and I'm guessing it's stronger in the shallower area by the island and the shore and the ice looked really bad, in fact I was getting nervous where Matt was taking us until I drilled and found 20" of ice. I think if anyone sees dark looking ice to the surface now they best avoid it until they have checked it to make sure it's safe. Afternoons were interesting when you start cutting through 8" of ice and slush that only leaves about a foot of gray ice to support you. The good black solid ice is pretty much gone for the season, so it is time to be very careful. Did anyone hear if they got themselves and their stuff out okay? I'm assuming no one got hurt since the headlines weren't about a drowning. Too bad that happened to them, it would be a terrible feeling, and at snowmobile speeds it probably sneaks up on you before you realize what's happening. Kind of ruins a fun trip. Long ways back to get help from way down there. Well be careful. Later J

[#800000]According to the State Parks website Jeff, the drivers of those two sleds did get out okay. And to think this happened within 50 yards of where we were fishing just the day before. Scary! I'm done for the season for sure.[/#800000]

If that is the area near the island over there, this spot is always a problem area and has claimed more than one vehicular "victim" over the years, even in better ice situations. However, when we were there on Tuesday, the edges were pretty sketchy in multiple areas and the area near the campground point heading towards East Portal bay also had a large dicey area. With the recent snow, one may not be able to even see these spots while moving quickly in a sled or even walking.

Please use due caution if you do go fishing up there in the next little while.

Thanks Bob, glad they were okay.... Matt and I were talking and he was saying what would you have done if they would have done that while we were sitting there fishing? Most likely when we were there they would have had to go one side of us or the other and if they went on the inside and hit the thin ice that would have been scary to see someone go through, but you'd feel guilty for guiding them around us and into thin ice... So glad it didn't happen the day before... Yup time to put the ice sleds away... Later J
