Selling Bait Fish in Utah
#1
Hey guys. No guarantees but I am thinking about possibly starting to sell bait fish (I.e Carp, Utah Sucker, Chubs, etc.). I've done a little research and I came across an old thread on this forum from 2011 where someone else had a similar idea to me. I read the responses in the post and saw that someone said you could do this if you purchased a Certificate of Registration or COR from the DNR.

First, I wondered if anyone knew if this was the case still, two, I wondered if anyone knew how much a COR costed, and three , I wondered if anyone would be interested in buying bait fish from me if I did that?

Potential advantages of buying it from me would include 1)that you wouldn't need to plan a separate trip or try to simultaneously catch bait fish while trying to fish for species that you actually want to catch, 2) that my bait fish would be much larger than the ones you buy at local places like sportsman's, 3) that I can do custom cuts of the bait fish(if you want the whole fish so you can cut it exactly how you want or use organs to tip things like worms, I won't touch the fish. I could also do it the fillet style places like sportsman's does except with my bigger fish. Or I could cut giant bait squares or other shapes like you would use if you're only going after HUGE fish,or I could prepare the fish with your custom instructions) and 4) you won't have freezer storage space problems anymore or a cranky significant other [Tongue].

Anyway, nothing is set in stone but I honestly just had this idea and wondered if anyone knew the answers to my first two questions and also if anyone would be interested in purchasing the fish from me if I were to do this. This would never be a commercial type business because I will be busy with my regular job and other stuff so I can't guarantee I would always be in stock with bait fish. But I just had this idea and thought it would maybe give some of you another option. Let me know if you guys know the answers to my first two questions or if you would be interested in my service. Thanks guys and have a great day.

Call the DWR tomorrow and they can answer your questions.

I think that when you find what it takes to do it legally it will be to much of a hassle to try and do it part time.

Also how long do you think that people will keep calling when you don't have any product to sell?

FishingLunatic, see you and I have more in common than you think![cool] Your idea to sell baitfish is a great one. You see a natural resource and want to make a little bit of money by selectively harvesting it and have fun doing it. Exactly like a rancher who harvests grass and turns it into beef! I wish you well in your endeavor and would second the opinion of the person who said to get in touch with the DWR and get the rules from the folks who make them.

I use a lot of cut bait but I don't feel like I would go out of my way to make the purchase. For me filling the bait bucket is part of the experience.

We will see. I'm gonna call the DNR tomorrow and what will be involved. If the COR or whatever isn't to expensive and I feel like I can make a little money not necessarily ton but some then it would be worth it.

As for my product availability I had a plan with that. If I go through with this then I plan on posting in the For Sale thread on BFT and that way people won't need to call me to find out if I have it. Additionally, according to the thread I looked at, with a COR I could sell my product to local places like Sportsmans. I just thought I would give BFT first dib's because the product you would get from me would be different from what you would get at sportsman's or wherever you went.

That's a very legitimate opinion. Everyone is different though. For some people they have limited time and want to spend there usable time only focusing on fishing for wat they truly want to catch. Neither philosophy is incorrect, it's just everyone is different.

You're exactly right bovine. I don't really care about carp populations as they are an invasive species but Utah suckers and chubs for example are native species in Utah so I'm going to harvest those fish responsibly. Regarding our past discussions, in general I'm more against things related to mining and drilling of any type than I am of harvesting timber and grazing responsibly. I've never thought you or many ranchers have poorly managed land. I have a problem with some of them but really the bigger issue is and will always be who gets more power and control if what you want were to happen. It doesn't matter if it's federal or state land, the federal and state workers have to work around state officials. I know what our state officials in the past have done and I know what their future plans are. It never was a problem I had with you, it was a problem I have the our state officials and with the process.

You will be in competition with me. I just applied to do that exact thing. $10.00 application fee. $75.00 for COR if approved. $15.00 for each person if any that you want to help you. Plus business license.

Cool Butley. I called them today and they told me about the application fee and COR fee. They didn't say anything about the business license. Do you know what's involved in getting the business license and the fee with that and also do you know how long it takes to get approved?

You might ask Tubedude. I know he's collected and shared minners, and many other fish-attracting items. Well, fisherman attracting at least.
But I don't know that he runs a "business" per se.

Like me, I make hot-pepper-powders, infused salts, and hot-sauces. But I'm a hobbyist.
Some of it goes GREAT on fish! Had an Apricot hot sauce that was wonderful on fish. A Kumquat too, great with a slab of salmon!. And for those into birding, a cran-apple sweet and warm.
