Mouth of the Provo 5/30/17

Well, I have been coming to this forum for a while but never had anything successful to speak of. Thus the name mr_no_catch..... This is my first posting here so I hope I did everything the correct way.

Growing up my dad took me "fishing" a handful of times but we never caught anything. I thought that was my lot in life until about 5 years ago when I started working with a guy that was talking about fishing on a daily basis. I picked his brain and started to learn some things and could actually catch something every now and then.

I had heard of the white bass run that happens yearly but didn't think much of it and didn't make an effort to get down to Utah Lake until this year.

I heard reports that people were catching more than 100 fish on a pretty regular basis. Any time I hear a report like that I think I will probably be able to catch a few. I loaded my wife and two young children in the car and headed to the Utah Lake State Park harbor. When we got there i was surprised to see the bank of the Provo River with so many people on a Tuesday morning, that is, until i started to fish.

I saw a small dock on the drive in and thought that we would go set up there but once we got there we saw that it was posted as "no fishing" so we walked 100 feet up from there and found an opening. I casted out a white curly tail grub on a red 1/8th ounce jig head and caught a fish on my first cast. I knew that it was going to be a good day if the first cast produced. We also had success with a powerbait atomic teaser in a chartreuse color.

We could see the fish very close to the bank in the morning but had to cast to the middle of the river to catch anything in the afternoon. We got a bit of sun but we had a great day catching over 50 fish. We kept some for fish tacos that seem to be all the rage and were not disappointed. I have attached some photos as proof.

Thanks to everyone on this forum for helping me learn some things about fishing. Maybe in the future I will even have to change my handle to mr_sometimes_catch.[Smile]

Glad you found em and your expectations were met. Fishing, especially for kids is way more enjoyable when you are catching. The best part is those little whities fight wonderfully for their size and they are hardy. I don't like taking my kids to the trout ponds because I know at least one will be hooked deep and I'm not real fond of dog food fed 10" trout. The kiddos can hook and release whities all day, keeping some for dinner of course.
