Big Sturgeon on Snake R.
#1
Went on the Snake Monday and Tuesday after sturgeon with my 81 year old cousin from Arkansas. The first day he caught a 5'6" and a 6'8" while I caught a small 4'2". He said that was the biggest fish he ever caught and if the trip ended then that his trip would be a great success.
Day two we slept in until 5:30 and launched by 6:30. We started off at the same spot where we caught our last fish on Monday. We never moved more than 200 yards and caught 8 sturgeon between 5'4" and 7'9' . One was 6'10", 2 at 7'0", 1 at 7'1" and 1 at 7'9". Wow what a great day. We lost 4 others. We tried using squid for the first time. Got a fish within 15 minutes and never another bite, so we went back to using Herring for the rest of the trip. Most fish were caught in 55 feet of water.
What a chore for two guys to land these fish, bring in rods, 2 anchors, take pictures, and measure fish. It was too hot and windy to fish on day 3 so we came home to rest. At 81 years old he sure had a lot of energy, or at least adrenaline.
Here is the best photo of the trip. It's his 6'8"er.

Congratulations Hue on a great trip. Yep, landing sturgeon, with only two anglers on the boat, is a wild scene.

Great picture/ Looks like my old stomping grounds on CJ. I grew up only 25 miles from there and fished it all the time until I moved down to SLC in 2006.

Here I am wishing I was fishing and a guy two years my senior is hauling sturgeon out of CJ.
I think I would need a 12 speed transmission on my reel and a real good boatman to do that.

Great Picture

Yes indeed I had a good teacher. I also had a great deckhand even though he is 81 he is very active and spends a lot of time fishing the Arkansas river and Lake Degray in Arkansas. After pulling the rear 12 lb. anchor all day the first day we decided to put a float on it and toss it overboard like the front anchor when we hook up on a fish. Sure did speed things up and saved a lot of pulling. Then after landing the fish, we would just motor up to the rear float, tie it off and motor up to the front float, tie it off and be in the same position as we were before.
According to the weight charts, the 11 sturgeon we caught weighed over 1400 lbs.. Not bad for 2 days of fishing for 2 newbies.

A twelve speed transmission and being electric would be nice.
