Great day at Willard. Hucked the dike and was fishing by 10 AM. First kitty on my third throw with my fly rod and then it got better. Five fish in the first 20 minutes and finished the hour with five more. 11 to 12 it slowed down a bit. Guessing seven or eight was all. Slowed right down after noon. Between 12 and 1, a couple or three kitties, a green sunfish and a wiper. Finished the slam so I packed it back over the dike and drove around to the South Marina to make some dinner guests presentable. Probably my best day this summer. Hopefully, many more to come.

I have always wanted to fish Willard with a fly rod. Would you please tell what your set up consists of. Sinking or floating line, (intermediate or fast sink) leader length and of course what flys are most productive. Thanks

Not to hijack the thread but I use a full sink with about 5-6' of 10 lb mono. Most baitfish patterns work for wiper and crappie.

Remo is right on. I use a six weight rod with either a type 4 full sink line or a sink tip line. When the fish are on the rocks like they seem to be now, the sink tip keeps you from hanging up on the bottom as much. My go to fly right now is a sz 6 dark sparkly wooly bugger, tied with lead eyes to help get it down and provide additional action when stripped. Won't be long before I'll move up to a sz 4 bugger. Size gets bigger as this year's shad get bigger. Hope this helps and if you'd like to meet up sometime, pm me and we'll arrange a date.
