occasionalfisher, Chick, bass, 9/28/17, Swin
#1
We fished a little club tourney out of Chester Frost yesterday.
First of all, this is the first time I have been up to Chick since April, and the lack of that thick hydrilla is obvious, but we still found some good grass scattered around.
Thursday the wind blew out of the north, and that limited some of the places we could fish because we could not buy a moving bait bite of any kind. Fished topwater (one bite, one follow) soft swimbaits and chatterbaits both in and out of the wind and not but one strike.
Thursday we caught 19 bass, we did not have a keeper all day. Probably missed that many or more "bites" because of the wind and how they were biting the lures. If the boat was moving at all you were not going to catch the fish because if you waited to feel the bite you would not catch the fish. Every fish I caught came when something just didn't feel right or it felt mushy. If you felt the strike you missed the fish.
We caught fish from a foot to 12 feet deep and caught most of our fish around docks, but not all of them. Fish came on a shakeyhead, senko, texas rig and a neko rig.
Winning sack for tourney was 15.73 and they had a 6.93 largemouth. Second place was 10 something and those two were the only limits. Third place was 9 something with four fish. There was one smallie caught and it was a pretty thing about 3 and a half pounds.
We had fun fishing and fished hard all day and not a keeper, and we were not the only boat with that problem. One other boat never caught a keeper and three others caught just one or two keepers.
Water temps were 79 to start and 83.8 when we finished at 3 pm. Hopefully the lake will cool off because this hot water has the fish scattered I think.
We did find a stretch of bank out on the river that had some really thick, healthy grass with deep water nearby and fallen trees with the wind blowing on it, and in 30 minutes of fishing the grass, trees and the break not only did we not catch anything, but we never got a bite, that place should produce fish this time of year, but nothing at all.
