Barbed Hooks vs Barbless Hooks
In a nutshell barbless hooks will not damage the fish as badly as barbed hooks. If you plan on releasing your catch please pinch the barb tips in using pliers. If you fish in a country with minimum sizes placed on certain species i highly recommend going barbless on your single & treble hooks. Barbed tips can severely injure or possibly kill fish by damaging the eyes to the gills. For myself i don't fish for food, i enjoy the peace & quiet & the alone time.
There are times i do fish for consumption. From Reds at night to jigging the FADS for Tuna. Also if you accidently hook yourself the damage is minimal if those barbs are pinched in. Just remember to keep constant pressure on the fish otherwise it'll throw the hook.
