Newton?
#1
Has anyone popped by Newton yet this week? Wondering what the hard deck, if there is one, looks like now? Thinking about heading that way today.

I heard reports that it hadn't started freezing when Hyrum and Mantua did so it will likely be behind those two, but I haven't heard a fresh report or been there for a bit. So I'm not adding much to your quest... Good luck... J

I was hoping you might reply skunked. I guess I'll stick to Mantua today and pop in up that way next week. Saw it got down to 10° up there last night. Shouldn't be long now [Wink]

Hey maybe I'll see ya at Mantua this afternoon... Playing hookey from work this afternoon to fish on the way home... Cache Valley has been below freezing since a week ago Monday, we should have more ice than we've got, I don't know why it's so slow growing... I have a farm pond that started freezing the first night we got ice anywhere... It has only grown to 3 1/4" so far, but Dad lives on Cutler and told me the night before last that there were 6" on his slough now... So things are pretty uneven this year... I'll try and get over to Newton and let ya know what I find... It's only 8 miles from home, so I should be able to get over there, but it's been hard to find time..

Can you send me your address on a PM... I lost it and I still have your gift certificates I owe you and/or your son for the contest.. Sorry I'm so slothful... Later Jeff

Went to Newton this morning intending to fish through the ice. The reservoir is ice covered. Unfortunately the water is rising and the areas near the shore are either open water or thin ice. I managed to get on the main ice sheet at the base of the boat ramp and drilled a test hole. The ice was 2 inches thick but the quality was not that great - definitely not ideal clear ice. The rising water is causing the main ice sheet to crack near the dam. I don't like to use a plank to get onto the ice early in the season so I'm going to hold off on fishing this water for a while. Three photos attached.

Thanks for that report 10ft. Looks like It's a good thing I stayed closer to home today. Looks like it's gonna be at least another week before that deck is hard enough to play on. Hopefully the storm this weekend doesn't just put a warm blanket on it.

Anyone been past Newton the past few days? Wondering if the edges have iced up enough to get out?

I've been wondering the same thing, but didn't get a chance to run over last night... It's been fairly warm during the days so I'm not sure it's been good ice building weather... I'm sure after the deep freeze sets in next weekend, that it will get good in a couple days... I'm thinking that it will still be a little scary at this point... won't be too long though... Later J

Buddy of mine fished it yesterday. He was saying that it was about 3.5 to four inches thick where he was at.

Did he say how the edges were? Do we need to bring a plank to get onto the ice? Thanks J

He said they were a little soft but he didn't have any issues getting out. His advice was to just walk fast and you'll be fine haha.

I fished it today. 5.5" total ice but the top is refrozen slush with 1/2" water layer except where the snow is and it hasn't frozen there so only about 3.5" of ice there. Was really slow today for us. One 11" perch for three guys in about 4-5 hours. Seen fish but couldn't make'em bite. Good luck. Later J
