Warming begins at the Beach 4-21-18
#1
ES: I launched at Lincoln on Saturday at about 3 P.M. with air temp about 65 and little or no wind all evening. The channel depth was just over 4 feet at that shallowest. Water temps ranged from 58 to 63.5 and I caught fish in 1.5 to 6 FOW. The bait of the day was cut WB but I also got a few on the crawlers and dough balls I was using to try to get fresh carp for bait. Some were taken slow dragging and others under a bobber. The final tally was 1 bullhead, 2 whites and 16 channels ranging from 18” to 27.5”.

FS: Saturday was supposed to be spent with my wife getting some needed shopping done, but I caught a break. Her sister came up from Saint George and took her to SLC for the afternoon. I got to go fishing and with one day warming trend I went to Lincoln.

I made a couple of last minute calls and as usual I had to go alone. I got to the ramp a little before 3 and the was encouraged to see parking lot and bank were both fuller than I had seen them since before school started last fall. I figured with that many out fishing there must be good things happening.

At the ramp I talked to 3 different boats on their way in. 2 had skunks on their decks and one had found a bullhead and some whites in the shallows by the reeds. When I said I was after cats, the latter kindly gave me his left over (but fresh) shrimp. I dragged it for several hours, but the bait of the day was cut WB.
Once on the water the temp was a balmy 61. I had planned to go out and fish shallow for the first hour and get a carp for bait and then travel up Goshen Bay or over to Provo Bay but my big motor started up fine, idled a bit rough for a minute or two and then died. It repeated the same sequence about 4 times during the evening, so I didn’t go far from the harbor.

I went screaming out of the harbor with my electric wide open and headed for the reeds on the south shore. As I approached I saw a spot where a couple of carp jumped several times on the edge or in the reeds. I anchored and tossed out a two hook setup with a corn sweetened dough ball on one hook and piece of crawler on the other. Next I tossed a boober with cut white bass. In 18” of water, the temp had gone up to 63.

I was still organizing when my “carp rod” got a pop and drop. It was more like a slash and slack, but I missed my first “carp.” 5 minutes later same thing, only this time I got a little weight but it came unbuttoned just as a tail came out of the water. It wasn’t orange, but looked strangely like a catfish. Just then the bobber started swimming away, another set more weight and a whole cat came out of the water, then returned my hook without further comment.

In the next hour things got slower, but better. I landed 3 channels. 1 on the dough ball, 1 on the worm and 1 on WB. All were eating size, less than 23”) so it was a decent start to the day. Also, I got a white and a bullhead. If I could just catch that carp I would have a slam.

After that bite slowed I pulled the anchor and headed North East, dragging 2 flaits, one shrimp and one WB. I went from 3 feet to 6 feet and nothing. As the depth slowly increased the water temp slowly decreased to 59. Due north of the slough mouth I turned back south east. When I hit 5 FOW the WB rod went off and I landed a 22-inch cat. Half way to a limit if eaters and I still 5 hours to quitting time. One boat had anchored off the slough in about 2.5 FOW. I don’t know how they did, but they left after a few hours.

After watching the water cool as I went deeper I just couldn’t help but think shallow meant warm and warm was important in the spring. I kept heading SE until I was a short cast from the reeds. Again I had seen some carp jumping and again I anchored and tossed out the carp rod and the bobber rod. Again I got cats on the carp rod and the bobber rod. I used the think carp were easy to catch.

The fish came in little waves and right at dusk I got a good spurt. I had given up on carp and gone to 2 WB/bobber rigs. Just as I hooked my seventh keeper on one rod, the other one went off. I hooked that one and put the rod in a holder. I ended up getting both fish in, a double! Then things got really interesting. A wave of larger fish came though. I go no doubles, but the next 3 were 25.5, 27 and 27.5. Great fun!

As Dusk turned to dark the bite stopped at my spot so I pulled the anchors and went to dragging WB back toward the harbor. When I left the shallows, the water had cooled to 61 and by the time I made the harbor 2 hours later is was at 58. Just at dark my phone battery ran out so I got no more pictures. Those last 2 hours yielded 4 more cats and the last one gave the best fight of the day. It was smaller than the earlier ones, at just over 26”, but hit like a train and fought for several minutes to stay on the bottom. A fitting end to a great spring outing.

Perhaps the motor problems were a blessing in disguise.

I was afraid you would ask. Do you notice anything missing in the pics? I forgot to tape my new smaller logo on to my board. I was so focused on getting the numbers readable, I never even thought about it until 2 seconds after I released the largest one. Then I thought: Oh Darn it! (or something like that)

A while back TD said something about not entering fish about that size, but waiting for bigger ones. If anyone else had asked first, I would have gone with his version, but since you asked, I forgot to include the logo[Tongue]

I have more free time this year so I'm hoping it won't matter in the end. It was sure fun catching them though.

Well!... this is good news. I was beginning to think there had been a massive die-off of catfish last winter given my poor luck so far this year. Glad to hear you found some willing takers and landed a few good ones.

I rode out that way Sat. just to see what was going on. Lots of boats and tanglers in and around Lincoln. Was wishin' I was fishin' but had other things going on at home. I plan to fish Lincoln the rest of the week with good weather promised.

Gotta fish while I can cuz I have a letter from the Fourth District Court that my presence is required next M, T, and W to exercise "one of the most cherished of all rights" to serve as a possible juror. I have considered asking to be excused because the catfish are starting to bite but... yeah right, that would go over really big. Just my luck i will be chosen to serve on some high-profile murder case that will require the jury to be sequester for a month or so. Anyhow, proud to serve but just wish they could have called during the winter.

Anyhow, good to get a favorable report. Hope to post up a few entries in the cat contest this week.

Pisco, we offer the forgiveness program that we let you get away with a couple without the label... Go ahead and post them and I'll be lenient.... If they were the biggest fish in the contest, then we may have to be more strict, but for this point in the contest when it's likely they will be bumped by the end of the contest, I say go ahead and lets get them on the charts... Thanks for the kind words DonaldC. In reality I enjoy writing them and writing things down helps me learn from each trip, and I have a built in fishing journal by just keeping a copy of each one.

This was the first one where I included the ES (Executive Summary). I was thinking some folks might think my reports were too long winded[Wink]

[#0000FF]Nice work. Every silver lining has a cloud...or however that goes. Hope your motor is an easy fix. Glad you found some playful fishies close to "home".

Sounds like I got to get my cat-tackle down thataway. Will be visiting Willard sometime this week and then look out UL kitties.

Thanks! It was a good trip.

I always get bummed when the motor has hiccups, then I settle down and realize it is usually something simple. Tonight I'll check the the fuel connector (failed once before), the fuel filter, then pump a little fuel into a jar and see if I have water in it and if needed check the plugs.

The day we had the mini floatila at Lincoln I lost my trim/tilt and then the fish finder quit working and when I went to put the boat on the trailer, the gas motor died and wouldn't restart.

First two problems were a loose screw, found and fixed in 5 minutes. I was thinking the motor had flooded, so I tried it at home and it fired right up. I was ecstatic to have fixed all three in half an hour, but the motor problem wasn't really fixed.

Good luck at Willard and let me know when your headed south.

BTW, I thought of a question for you. Do you have any knowledge/info/experience with temperature gradients in Utah Lake?

I've always thought were were fooling ourselves when we say the surface temp is the water temp, but it is so shallow and gets wind mixed so often that now I'm thinking it may be much more uniform than most lakes.

Bottom line is that surface temps is still a good point of reference, I'm just curious.

I recommend posting all your fish bigger than your smallest. I don't mind bumping and that way you see how you're doing. I know Pat has to go to shore and monkey around to get photos so I can see he only wants to post the big ones, but most of us it's not a big deal to practice taking pictures on the smaller ones so we don't goof on the big ones. I like to see full three fish entries. Thanks for getting yours in. Later J

Thanks for letting me know. That makes sense considering the value of activity.

Will do!

[#0000FF]You are right in your evaluation...that the lake is so shallow and wind influenced that there will seldom be much (if any) difference between surface temp and temp at several feet deep. And there are times when a cold north wind is blowing across the surface that the surface temp is likely to be at least a couple of degrees lower than at the bottom.

That area just out from all the reeds...south of the boat channel...is often a tad bit warmer than surrounding lake water. For one thing it is slightly protected from mixing winds. For another, there are some warm spring seeps along that area. The cove with the little pump house can be a good place to fish right after iceout...when water levels are up. Depth might only be a couple of feet but temps can be several degrees warmer than the rest of the lake. I have had days in early March where I caught nice white bass every cast...at least those casts where I didn't get a walleye or catfish...and I was fishing in the only open water. The rest of the lake was still covered in ice.

I used to have a depth/temperature gauge that I could lower for variation readings. I never noticed much change anywhere on Utah lake. In fact, when I lowered it into the springs the water temp was pretty close to main lake temps. No more ultra warmed water as in days of old.

Thanks for the detailed report! I was the dude with the shrimp. Glad to hear you faired better for cats than we did. Sounds like we made the mistake of dragging in deeper water that day. We got into a bunch of WB and got distracted from our primary goal. We were also admittedly less patient than you were.

As for the motor, I find that Utah lake especially has good fishing within a stones throw of about anywhere. Just have to find it, which you definitely did. I've only ever needed a TM, wind permitting.
