Willard Spring Thursday –
Weather overcast but moderate air temps. Shore fishing today. Started at Pelican Beach at 4:00pm soaking mussels. No bites. Two other groups on the beach having no bites. We then headed to the mouth of the North Marina. Soaked mussels in the Channel and threw chartreuse jigs around the bushes. No bites. There were a about 20 people all around the inside of the North marina looking for crappie love. I talked with a half dozen of them. No bites reported. Stumbled around the rocks and broke one of my rods. One fisherman reported doing OK on wipers a week ago on the South West corner beach.
Next I drove over to the north dyke near the pump house. This was new for me, since I am not usually a shore fisherman in this area. Here is the next interesting encounter: A young (28 yr old?) DWR officer asked to see our fishing licenses as we parked along the road north of the dyke. He was flustered and seemed to be having a bad day. We gladly showed him our licenses. His shirt was messed up, pants wet, boots wet and unzipped. He said to us “thanks for just being nice citizens and not trying to stab me or beat me up”. Apparently he just came from an altercation which ended in a fight and him in the water. He said he lost his cell phone in the water and is not going to be getting reimbursed for that one. Wow, I felt bad for him and wondered about the state of our society.
He did say that there were wipers being caught on mussels today off the rocks at Freeway Bay, and that someone had caught the biggest wiper he has seen taken out this lake. Today? Yes today.
I did some jigging at the base of the pump spillway. No love. Scrambled onto the rocks by the pump. Cast some white jigs off the rocks for about 20 minutes. No hits. A thunderstorm with lighting cruised in and forced us off the lake. A dozen mosquitoes tried to eat us while heading back to the truck. Prior to this there we no mosquito problems all day, only midges everywhere.
That’s it for Thursday’s shore fishing.
