Miller Flat & Mammoth before the Holiday
#1
I hadn't fished Miller Flat in a couple of years so I headed out this morning to fish it. I launched my tube near the dam about 6:45 and fished until 9:45. I was meeting up with some other folks on Mammoth around 10:00 or I would have stayed a little longer.

When I started out on the water I thought there was something wrong with my fishing buddy. I have never seen so many fish symbols on the screen at one time. The reservoir level is only at 37% so the fish are really concentrated. This would be great place to bring someone that is new to float tubing and let them catch some fish regardless of what type of fishing they like. I was fly fishing with a fast sinking line and size 8 bead head soft hackle flies in tan and green. I picked up all rainbows from 11" - 15" long. I did mark some good sized fish on the finder but never hooked any. The water temperature was 65-66 degrees and the visibility in the water of about 4'.

I joined up with my friends at Mammoth about 10:00 and launched near the middle of the reservoir at 10:15 and fished until 3:15. I used the same tackle as I did at Miller Flat. The fishing wasn't nearly as fast but we managed to pick up a good number of fish, all tiger trout between 12" - 18". Most of the fish came from water that was 15' - 35' deep and near the bottom.

The water temperature was 65 degrees and the visibility in the water of about 8'. The reservoir is 73% full and dropping.

Unless the water users decide to stop irrigating early this year, the fish are going to be in a lot of trouble. We are going to need a bumper crop of snow this next year or the fish aren't the only ones that are going to be in trouble.[:/]

You might want to plan a trip in a couple of years. I noticed that the DWR started stocking brookies in there this year.[Wink]

It's not Mammoth, it's Miller Flat and they were just over 3" long.
