Redemption at the Berry ... 10/27/2018

[#800000]In an effort to redeem myself from the skunkation I received during my last trip to the Berry, I and some neighbor friends decided to give it a go today. We left Harrisville quite early and was the second rig to pull into the Renegade marina at pre-dawn.[/#800000]

[#800000]We didn't have to pay for parking because the pay station was wrapped up for the season.[/#800000]

[#800000]I was glad to see that there were some Porta-Potties there for us.[/#800000]

[#800000][inline Porta-Poties-444.jpg][/#800000]

[#800000]I was also happy to see a dock still in the water so that no one had to climb into the boat from the bank.[/#800000]

[#800000]We started our fishing by vertical jigging tubes tipped with chub out on a point east across the bay from the ramp. We were doing OK but not real good. The kids wanted to leave fish to find fish. And you know me, I always fall for that trick. So we decided to try flat-line trolling some gold Jake's Spin-a-Lures [/#800000][#800000]([#4040ff]as described by Bigox last week[/#4040ff][/#800000][#800000]). It has been a long time since I witnessed trolling fishing so fast. The catching may have been fast, but the fish sure were small. I had no idea that the Berry had such small trout in there![/#800000]

[#800000]We trolled two rods on plainer boards and two straight back. The plainer boards weren't all that good of an idea … not that they didn't catch plenty of fish, but it was kind of a circus with young kids and fast bites. Yea, the boards increased our catches but also increased the confusion. If I were to troll again out there, I would just stick to two lines straight back. That would keep you plenty busy.[/#800000]

[#800000]After getting a workout with the trolling, and a major tangle up, we decided to go back to jigging for the bigger fish. We ran down to a favorite point N-W of the ramp and set up shop there. Finally, we were back into catching bigger fish again![/#800000]

[#800000]We ended the day catching 35 fish which wasn't too bad considering I actually fished very little and everyone else was new to jigging for trout. Lori, Gabe, and Carson caught the bulk of our numbers while Col and I spent much of our time driving the boat, undoing tangles, and baiting hooks.[/#800000]

[#800000]Our three largest fish were all 21 ½ inches … we never punched past the 22 inch goal.[/#800000]

[#800000]The weather and company was phenomenal and the water surface temps have finally dropped below 50° to 48°. The algae was not an issue at all for us where ever we fished. Not too bad at all.[/#800000]

[#800000]Here are a few pics for the kids to share with their friends:[/#800000]

If so, might I suggest you make a set of boards from the plans I posted on BFT? They will eliminate ALL the hassle of using those clip on boards. When a fish hits off my boards, they release just like off a downrigger and when resetting, you just attach a new clip to the fishing line and let it slide out to the board on the board line - never have to retrieve the board until you finish fishing with it for the day. Just a thought. [/#800000][Wink]

[#800000]And nice job getting the kids into some great memories.[/#800000]

I may switch to jigging it is no fun catching those little fish

one thing for kids they don't have time to get board.

I think we got every one of these even some that was 4"
