The right-handed pitcher agreed in principle on a two-year contract Wednesday with the Chicago Cubs, returning to the team where he began his pro career. The deal is believed to include a vesting option for a third year that could bring the total value of the contract to $24 million.

It is believed that Maddux would earn $7.5 million in each of the first two years of the deal, and the third year would be added if he were to meet certain performance goals in 2005.

Maddux still needed to pass a physical on Wednesday and once that hurdle is cleared, an official announcement could be made later in the day.

Maddux was expected to work out with the Cubs pitchers and catchers on Thursday at Fitch Park. They'll have no problem finding a No. 31 jersey for him.

Maddux was the Cubs' second-round draft pick in 1984 and pitched for the big-league team from 1986-92, winning his first of four Cy Young awards in '92 with a 20-11, 2.18 ERA season. But he left via free agency after that year.
