I tried to hit Porcupine this morning and it was a great trip buttttt, it snowed about a foot of new heavy snow last night and they were just starting to plow the road as I got there but he did get me a nice parking spot at the bottom of the dam. I took my sled (snowmobile) just in case and that was a good choice the hill has at least 18” of snow on it now and I wouldn’t take my truck up there anymore, but it was fresh and bad today. It may improve but take chains and a shovel if you try it. Anyway I had a fun ride to the east end pulling the loaded down Nanook Smitty. Got stuck in the top parking lot so I dropped the Smitty and then tried to blaze a trail down onto the ice before I checked the edge. Bad choice, it’s a lot steeper than it looked and in two feet of soft snow I got in a mess in a hurry. Tried to side hill out after checking and finding the edges were open water for about 8 feet out. Second step towards ice was over my knee boots deep and I didn’t take a plank today so after finding no logs to get me on the ice I gave up and went back to trying to get me and my sled out of there. Good I used to be a snowmobiler I needed all my old lessons to get out of there. Did get stuck about 3 times but finally got out of there and then had to dig out the Nanook. The snow was so sticky today that it balled up on everything and really weighed things down. Lots of work later I got out of there without wetting a line. Pretty bummed about that, but went to Hyrum on way home and it was fishing pretty good today. Lots of perch and I used the camera to sort through the fish and catch the bigger fish. Problem was bigger was 7-8”ers. I did get a fat 18” bow that was a beautiful fish it had two 6” perch in its belly and beautiful orange meat. Looking forward to smoking that one up. Anyway the lessons for today was don’t drive into Porcupine and better take a long plank if you fish it and it’s a long ways down in the hole to the water level. I did feel bad I didn’t get to try it today, but Hyrum was a great plan B and only about 2” of slush on it. Later J

Glad you made it out ok and still got some fishing in. Like my dad always used to say “I’m not stuck, just temporarily detained”.

Sounds like a tough day. I'm glad you got some fishing in though and that is a good looking trout. I guess it knew what to do with 6" perch! I wouldn't have guessed it would eat them that big.

It has been to long since I had any perch. I'd prefer a little longer than 6" though[ ]

Glad you made it out. Can be a long time between people up there if you need help.
Tough way to find out the conditions.
That's one of the better trout I have seen in awhile, enjoy it. You deserve it after the work to get it.

I agree with your dad. However, sometimes I can make some big delays. This time it wasn’t too bad, but I sure was sore this morning. I think my snowmobile gets heavier each year. Sure enjoy those kind of trips though. Later J

I didn’t know bows were fish eaters so I was surprised as well. Looks like it was doing very well on them. Hope the rest learn to eat them too so they get thinned out a little. Was a fun day, just felt bad I didn’t get my Porcupine fishing in. It’s going to be tough to fish that pond for the rest of the season. Unless it warms and melts anyway. Later J

It was a workout but still an enjoyable day. Won’t complain too much about it. I am glad I didn’t take anyone with me on that one I could have gotten us in trouble. Thanks for the well wish. .later J

"I didn’t know bows were fish eaters so I was surprised as well"
[#0000FF]Surprising that your fish ate perch so large, but not surprising it ate perch. Most lakes that have perch and trout see the trout utilizing young perch for food. Browns are notorious perch eaters, but even rainbows chow down on the perchlets. Starvation and Jordanelle are a couple of lakes from which I have caught rainbows with perchies in their tummies. However, they are usually small young-of-the-year models...less than a couple of inches long.[/#0000FF]

Thanks for your report last night on the other board it saved us trying to get in to porcupine this morning, we stopped when we got to Hyrum and did pretty good where you told us to go, in fact those are your frozen over holes in the picture, we did what you suggested but switched to eye balls after the first few fish we caught well over 50 Pearch and 8 trout of which we kept 6. Five of them where finless Freddy but one of them had all of its fins and had very dark pink flesh, the bite died around noon. We stopped at Mantua on the way home fore an hour or so but only caught a couple there.

Thanks Pat it was a fun adventure. Tried a couple others today got two crappie on the first one. Best was 12”. Then this afternoon I tried the Bear River and the ice held but there sure is a lot of current underneath. I kept seeing stuff on my finder so I put the camera down to see what it was. Wow talk about Hugh tankers. Carp after carp after carp. Couldn’t get them to take anything and then my jacker went off and that critter pulled drag like there wasn’t any. I finally cranked it down tight enough to stop it and fought it back to the hole and just when it was almost in it took a quick run and pulled loose. I was so bummed but turns out I’d snagged a scale and the fish pulled the scale out as it made the last run. I really could have used that one for the contest. Sure was a fun and great fight. Pat any idea how to get carp to bite this time of year? Thanks Later J

"any idea how to get carp to bite this time of year?"
[#0000FF]I have not ever fished for them through the ice and do not remember ever hearing of anyone who did. But I do know they will occasionally slurp up a baited jig meant for other fish.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF]If you simply want some hand-to-fin combat...or maybe some bait for the upcoming kitty contest...try soaking a piece of crawler on the bottom. Wherever corn is legal I am sure that would get some attention too.[/#0000FF]

Corn's now legal wherever bait is allowed in Utah.

[#0000FF]Unless they have changed the regulations since the 2018 book, that is not true.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF][/#0000FF]Using corn as bait
In 2018, the Division will continue its
pilot study that allows the use of corn as
bait at the following waterbodies:
• Cutler Reservoir
• Deer Creek Reservoir
• Electric Lake
• Fish Lake
• Flaming Gorge
• Lake Powell
• Stateline Reservoir
• Utah Lake
Corn is an effective bait for kokanee
salmon and is legal in all the surrounding
states. Studies have shown that it has no
harmful effects on fish or their digestive
processes.
Although you may now use corn
at the waterbodies listed above, you
must still follow Utah’s other laws
that regulate chumming and littering.
Throughout the pilot study, Division
biologists and law-enforcement officers
will be monitoring these areas closely to
see if the use of corn should be expanded
or discontinued.

Pat, you need to get the 2019 Guidebook. Under "What's New". "Corn is now a legal bait at all Utah waterbodies where bait is allowed. This change does not allow anglers to violate Utah's chumming or littering laws."
