....at least it was for me today.
Had planned to meet John at the BRBR boat ramp @ 7 a.m. But he had transportation difficulties. So I got there and launched by 0728. Here are the tech numbers for those that want or care. Air temp was 55, water temp was 63 at launch. Air warmed up to 78 and water up to 66.5 on departure at about 2 p.m.
The level of the river is up quite a ways, but there are still sudden shallow spots, mud banks, and barely submerged tree limbs, etc. My goal today was, well catch catfish of course, but also some more recon work on t he river itself. I'm always wary of getting stuck on something in sudden shallow water or in a river that could have everything from trees, to cars, to cows, sunken or floating in it.
I got up to a likely looking spot, dropped anchor, baited up one 6/0 Octopus hook with some of the cut carp I had left from a few weeks ago, and one #4 Bait hook with a fresh worm. Got them out, and didn't wait long. Young (small) female (yep full of eggs) swallowed the worm, and PRESTO, I got some fresh bait.
Looking behind me, south-west, nice blue sky. Looking ahead of me, south-east kind of cloudy and looking like rain. But it never did rain, I got a nice almost constant breeze that kept all the pesky flyin and bitein buggers away.
Moving along. On the water, never spend more than 1 hour in the same spot unless it is producing. Cat # 1 took a hook almost too big for it's mouth, and by the look of her side, something had tried to take her not long ago.
Photo marked 1000 map, top edge shows the way-point I made last year (the Red & White Diver Down flag) that was as far as I got last year in low water.
***** I got interrupted at this point Sat. nite *******
Basically, I was able to get as far down as where my GPS map says "Willow Creek" . Don't have the photos on this PC from there on. I did boat another nice Cat in that area, posted on the Cat contest forum. Probably could have gone further, but day was getting late and needed to get home.
Wife and I went back out yesterday, Sunday. I guess she is correct when she says she is a jinx when she is with me........[:/] she boated 6 Carp, we kept 4 to replenish our bait supply. Me........... I took home that stinky black and white critter again, and several new skeeter, horse fly and deer fly bites. [mad]
