Strawberry - 10/23/19
#1
I was asked to give a report after fishing Strawberry today and so here it is. Forgot to remember that I had taken the fish finder off of the boat (because of freezing temperatures) and so we sort of fished blind. I had my hand-held depth finder along, so that at least helped us know the depth we were starting at (with the wind we couldn't stay put). Wind started at 9:00 AM and never quit by the time we left at 2:00 PM. It progressively got stronger as the day progressed. Had issues with my i-Pilot remote, so I had to resort to anchoring up the old fashioned way, using an anchor. No biggee because with the wind I would have used my anchor anyway. My power trim, several times, raised the outboard, all the way to the top, on its own, which is a new opportunity that I have never experienced before. [If anyone else has experienced this and have a suggestions on how to possibly fix that issue I would like to hear it.]

Now, the catching report. Strawberry was on fire today. I caught 58 (two rainbows and the rest, with the possible exception of one under the slot, were all in the slot. Chuck caught a few less. I am confident that had the wind not been so strong, and I wouldn't have played around casting a fly behind a bubble as long as I did, that I would have caught substantially over 100 cutts today. Early they were close to the surface and then later we were catching them all the way from the surface to vertically on the bottom. Did especially well in 22' of water and did fairly well in 33' of water. White or white with black speckled tube jigs, tipped with cut bait was the ticket.

I was wondering how the wind was going to be. I always check the National Weather Service (NOAA) the day before I go fishing. The prospects for wind yesterday didn't look that promising. We canceled a trip planned for this last Tuesday because of snow. Seems to me that Strawberry has has had it's fill of wind as of late. You usually get a few morning hours of calm water but the last 3 times I've been up it was windy to start with.

Tomorrow and Saturday look to be decent days temp wise then it turns to #$%^&*(. I don't like to fish weekends so I might give tomorrow a try since it's not suppose to be very good next week.

Glad the fishing was good for you. Gotta love fishing Strawberry in the fall.

That is a nice amount of fish. Your trim raised the motor on it"s own, once, this summer when we were up on the Snake. "I ain't afraid of no ghost" "Who you gonna call?" A wild guess would be sticky contacts on the directional relay. Sometimes the contacts weld themselves together enough that the spring can't separate them as designed. The weld can break free and repeat again, getting worse each time.

Nice haul Kent.

Two of us were out on Tuesday fighting the wind that blew all day. We managed to catch 27 Cutts and 1 nice Rainbow.

Kent,
Not sure what sonar you use but it should not have to be removed during the winter temps.
There should not be any internal components that are not allowed to freeze.
I hope this info saves you some labor come spring and fall.

I have the Humminbird 899ciHD fish finder. You are probably right. I just looked at the manual and the only warning related to temperatures is, "Never leave the control head in a closed car or trunk. The temperatures generated in hot weather can damage the electronics."

I doubt it was that problem because it happened when none of the toggle switches were being touched. I spoke with Lee (Lee's Marine) and we concluded it was probably the bow toggle switch that needed to be replaced, because water splashed into the bow, from the large waves as a result of the strong winds, not long before I started having the issues. The switch likely got water in it. I just replaced that toggle switch (Only cost $5.34!) and I have my fingers crossed.

I also use this one to check road conditions during bad weather. I covers the whole state. Just move the map around using your mouse. Some of the cameras are right by Strawberry.

Thanks, I have used the Heber City Airport forecast before and not found it totally accurate for Strawberry. I realize it is at a lower elevation so the temps will typically be lower at Strawberry.

For some unknown reason, I am unable to open any of the cameras on that link.

Thanks Robert. Have you found the Sailflow forecast for the wind to be fairly reliable?

Try moving your mouse on the camera a little bit until it displays a pointing finger. Sometimes it displays a fist with no pointing finger if it displays that way I can't get it to open either.
