Fished with a friend this morning at UL state park. The ice is about 1”. There was one other fisherman at another boat dock. I tried out the new ultra light rippin rap lure I bought. Dropped it down the hole and jig it for 30 second. BAM “fish on” white bass. My friend did just as good with Swedish pimple with a mealworm. We ended up catching 12 white bass, but missing several right at the hole.

So does the white bass bite last after the ice gets thick enough to fish it safely? I need to try some of them this year. I've never got one through the ice, and I'd like to try it... Thanks Jeff

It seems like it is dependent on location. At Lincoln Beach just outside the first spring can be hot. At the State Park we kept catching them right off the docks. Just my experience.

The older I get the more I would rather be considered a good man than a good fisherman.

This is my 1st year ice fishing, but I think once the ice is thick enough for people to stand on the bite will be on.

That sounds like fun!!! Be careful trusting an inch of ice. That 2 7/8” that we were on was about as thin as I dare go out very far on. Stay safe. Later Jeff

Jeff,
The white bass action through the thicker ice is red hot for a week or two.
The day it is safe to fish and the fish are found a few ‘locals’ will show up and you will see them on their cell phones making calls to family/friends.
The next couple of days will be like a family reunion with every person bringing their favorite 5 gallon buckets. Every fish caught, including slot large mouth, go in to these buckets.
Not enough LEO around to stop it.

Sounds like one of those combat spots, maybe I don’t need to get in on it. Thanks Jeff
