Utah Lake 5/6
#1
I found myself at home with my three year old boy on Thursday. I know he gets bored being inside and so do I so I decided to take him to Utah Lake to go fish for some cats. I wasn’t super optimistic because we were going late morning and I had also gone at least once a week from mid March all the way through April and could only catch Mud cats.
Had a small bag of shrimp with me to use as bait and got fishing right away. Lost a flig on pretty much the first cast. Rerigged that pole and had a bite while getting a second set up. Set the hook and another flig gone. Bad knot. Got the second pole out and after a few minutes, we had a fish on. It was channel cat. That set the pace for the rest of the time until we ran out of bait. Six channels and three lost fligs. The boy had a great time “reeling them in” and netting them! I think he was more exited about the netting part.

I only had one fish so I did fill the last two slots for the contest haha.

Sounds like you might benefit from better or heavier line...and/or better knots.  Opportunities can be few and it ain't good to miss out on them.  Glad you had a good time with your fishing buddy.

Wow, way to go! Some fatness on those fellas!

For me getting into the good ones really requires the right conditions in the spring. So much for me to learn!

I'm usually not a terribly sophisticated fisherman, and do a lot on the cheap. I tend, for instance, to just buy decent quality mono line, and barely know anything about fluoro, etc. But, one thing I have done that I am very glad of, was to buy couple of medium-heavy Ugly-Stik combos, and load the reels with some pretty spendy 18 lb line as dedicated catfish rods.
