Hyrum 12/20

Meet up with DUBob, Jeff, Obi and Jmorefish at the swim beach, headed out onto the hard deck around 8. Set up in 32’ of water and marked fish on the bottom. They would follow the jigs but we’re very tentative in their bites. Obi moved around quite a bit (even checked out the Pig) but nothing much was happening. When we pulled the plug a couple trout about 15”s and some really small perch hit the deck. Ice was 4”s of clear solid ice, as I’m typing this snow has arrived and coming down hard. Fun day with the group, a lot of catching up as most of us hadn’t seen each other sense last season.

Tough day for sure I was 1 trout away from a skunk caught it in 9’ of water. As Allan said the bottom was carpeted in small perch that would chase but not commit. I left a little before noon and checked out Porcupine.

How was porcupine looking?

Hope the ice keeps growing as we look to be in for some warmer weather.

Thanks guys was a fun day to catch up and get out and wash some lures. Shawn (Eyelayo) you made the right call. But the ice seemed great so was glad to see 5” of good clear ice. After four misses I took the skunk home with me. I also decided I have way too much junk in my little flip, it was a tough pull up the slick hill. Maybe my extra Covid belly is catching up with me. Anyway I’m looking forward to the snowmobile. Later J

Got the invite to be there yesterday but decided to try somewhere closer to home.

Didn't commit, didn't commit?? Come on -- I had 2 of those giant perch commit, and we were only there about 3 hours! OK, so they were each 3.5"... 1 stayed for seagull food, 1 came home for some teeny fish bait pieces....All was not lost...good to try out gear after nearly a year, and good to fish with like-minded crazy fishermen....

Wasn't much better on the 21st or 22nd. One small rainbow over both days. Perch looking but not tasting.

Thinking of taking my kids out there tomorrow.  How was the ice? We went to Mantua today and it wasn't anything great. So Hyrum makes a shorter drive at least to not do so good haha. What is going on this year?!? Seems the local ponds don't wanna give up any eaters.

Did you notice if there were any snow machines out on the ice while you were there?

I didn't see any yesterday. Ice was around 6 inches where we were.

It was like that last year for me, too! Everything was "off".  None of the times, places, and tactics were working.  I only had a couple of good catching trips out of a dozen or so outings. Skunked at Mantua TWICE!
