Oregon Fisheries Update
March 19th – March 25th , 2004

Still no signs of great things for main-stem Columbia spring chinook. The gillnets will continue to fish as the test netting remains favorable. Location is a crap shoot as fish are reported from Bonneville to the estuary but catches are clearly isolated. Sturgeon fishing has improved but is by no means wide-open.
The smelt run is currently a non-event on the Cowlitz River where low, clear cold water is keeping the schools of baitfish holding in the Columbia.
The Willamette River has received a great deal of attention over the last week from anglers seeking spring chinook. Despite optimum water temperatures and clarity, catch rates remain low as the bulk of the run is yet to show. Springers are crossing Willamette Falls. The north coast continues to produce fair numbers of wild steelhead and a few broodstock fish on the Wilson but low water has most steelhead spooky and river forecasts indicate it may stay that way for a while. Anglers will have to use low water tactics to expect any measurable results.
South coast rivers producing steelhead now include the Siletz, Umpqua and Coquille. The first confirmed spring chinook was taken Friday, March 12th on the Rogue River which location is also providing geed fishing for winter steelhead.
Smallmouth bass are being caught in the Willamette River. Walleye anglers are doing very well in The Dalles Pool on the Columbia River. Central Oregon's Lake Billy Chinook is an option for Bull Trout fishing and the Grande Ronde and Wallowa Rivers hold some real promise for late steelhead anglers.
