camping and fishing rules
#1
This is an excerp from the standard examiner explore section and I couldn't of said it better

The bottom line is, leave it the way you would want to find it when you revisit the area."

One way to give back to nature is to take some responsibility for mistakes made by others.

"There's lots and lots of trash on trails," says Westling. But all people have to do is pick it up.
"Bring an extra plastic bag for garbage. We all benefit."

The Sierra Club's Tony Loftin agrees, saying, "It's more pro-active. It makes me feel good.

"And really, it all boils down to everyone being considerate," he says. "If it worked that way, you wouldn't need all the rules."

That leave-no-trace philosophy is rooted in the realization that real etiquette is more than just following rules. It is about being conscious of how we treat our fellow human beings.

A couple times I have been disgusted and packed a ton of garbage out. That gets to be a pain, so for a while I just didn't do it. My compromise is to pick up one can or piece of garbage every time I go out. This way I will do something every time I'm in the field. If everyone did this the problem would be solved.

ME AND MY FAMILY PICK UP TRASH WHEN EVER WE FIND IT EVEN ON WALKS IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD. I TRUELY WISH EVERYONE WOULD PICK UP THERE OWN TRASH. BUT I GUESS IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

IN FACT MY BIYS 5 AND 2 SAVE CANS AND FIND IT A TREAT WHEN THEY FIND ONE ON THE ROAD. WHEN MOST PEOPLE JUST THROU THEM AWAY. JUST A HINT. AND YES I AM A TREE HUGGER OF SORTS.

I definatly agree I always try to take a grocery sack and fill it, and hopefully one day I won't be able to fill a grocery sack (Due to lack of litter)

Man I agree 100%. I always try to pick up a little extra when I'm out and about. If we all picked up a little extra, we could put a nice dent in the litter.

Fool - I agree wholeheartedly. Sometimes I have watched the wind blow paper and light weight items onto the water surface and Sadly watch as it floats away. One thing that really bugs me is fishing line that is all over the shoreline. I have gotten tangled up and tripped in it (I know others would relish the chance to see me do that) and it's really frustrating. Take a few moments and clean up after yourselves - unless your mom goes fishing with you and she'll do it!

I know we have chatted about this topic before. But I am hoping that alot those guests that read these forums will see how serous the problem is and how strongly we feel about it and help by not leaving litter behind. I also carry a grocery bag with me and sometimes it feels like a never ending battle. But I still pick up garbage everywhere I go.

You guys got me thinking. I screwed up at Pelican last week! I went around and picked up trash and did a general clean up but forgot to put the makings for a new fire in the fire pit. It's nice to pull into a camp site and be able to start a fire without scronging around, espescially late at knight. Next time I'll remember!

Let's not forget the landscape below the surface. I dive in a number of the lakes around Utah and it never ceses to amaze me at the amount of crap that i see lying on the bottom. Beside your typical pop/beer can and bottle there are loads of empty jars of powerbait and other fisherman related garbage. A lot of times I'll fill up the cans I find with air to send them to the surface so others can see what I see. It seems to be the norm that if you can't see it, it's not a problem.

Leaky... thanks for the thread, it's good to be reminded about our duty in the outdoors.

Mikecromaine, it doesn't make you a tree hugger(though there's nothing wrong with that) to pick up garbage, it's just common courtesy.
