Sunday, 05/02/04- Hit the water early. Lanched at Lake Mead Marina because Las Vegas Bay is high and dry. The ramp is in good shape and was uncrowded at 5 a.m. It was nice to see the sunrise at Lake Mead again. We covered a lot of area - from the Boulder Islands, to Swallow Bay, to Fishfinder Cove, to all the way to the back of Las Vegas Bay. We were just kind of scouting around, checking things out. The back of Las Vegas Bay around Gypsum Wash & Hole 33 seemed to be the popular spot with the anglers today. Sonar showed tons of fish and the water was perfectly calm. We joined the crowd and stared drifting frozen shad. Nothing. We anchored and chumed like crazy with a bucket full of chopped up shad. Nothing. We moved and switched to anchovies. Nothing. We kept at it, this time using sardines soaked in shad oil. Nothing. We looked around at other anglers and never saw a single fish landed. We decided to head back to the harbor and fish by the tires. At least there we can watch the parade of pleasure boats enter and exit th harbor while we waste bag after bag of shad, anchove, and sardines. At about 11:00 a.m. I had a big strike! Oh, the opportunity to avoid being skunked. I was successful at landing a 7lb. carp! No kidding. I had a small chunk of sardine at about 20 feet deep. We were back at the dock at 11:35. What a traffic jam. While pulling the rig out of the dirt parking lot, the truck's rear tire experienced a sidewall tear on an unfriendly sharp rock. After changing the tire and loading the boat, I thought about what a good day it was. I think 2004 will be a good year to fish.
