Victoria Waterfront - Vancouver Island
#1

FISHING: Fair
Salmon fishing was SLOW off of the waterfront. Most of the salmon taken were in the 6 to 18 lb range, and not a lot of them were caught. Constance Bank was the best spot, but even out there, the bites were sporadic most of the time. Even the guides were scratching hard to find a salmon. Anchovy and spoons were the most productive bait this past week for those who did catch a salmon. If you want to troll artificial baits, try #4 Coyotes, #4 Titans or Gibbs Gypsy spoons in a silver/ green combination. The Live Image/Neon GRN SD St Coyote has been good. For plastics, use the Mint Tulip, Purple Haze or Army Truck patterns. HALIBUT – Halibut fishing was SLOWER out at Constance Bank. Most of the halibut caught were less than 30 lbs. However, a 120.8 lb “Barn Door” was taken out at Border Bank. This coming weekend’s 8th Annual Just for the Halibut Derby should see lots of flatfish coming from both banks. Extra Large Herring or Octopus fished off of a spreader bar with a 2 lb weight is the best bet to catch the big flatfish although some anglers have done well on jigs such as the Mudraker or Lucky Jig.
