Sunday on Conesus Lake
#1
Went out on Conesus Lake Sunday. Saw a lot of people fishing the North and South ends. We were unable to do much moving around because the battery in the boat was low and we had to jump it with a portable powerpack. We anchored in a little nook toward the south that has produced good numbers of panfish and pike for us in the past. We threw minnows, worms, spinners, and a variety of lures to no luck. I did catch a good sized bluegill, but just one. We spoke to a couple of groups of people passing by, they said they were bringing in good pike on just about anything they threw (of course). So we moved toward the northern end. We anchored by some docks, but all we caught were some more bluegills. As we were leaving we passed over a couple of huge schools of what appeared to be bass. They were all good sized and looked tasty. We pointed them out to some guys in a canoe that looked like they were looking for bass. They said they were catching some monsters by various docks.

So apparently, to catch the pike there, trolling the edges seemed to be the best producer. Of course, had we been trolling the edges, they'd have been in the deep water in the middle. If your into catch and release bass fishing, they seemed to be located in the shallow water (3-5 feet) around docks.

All in all, it was a productive day. I got a bluegill dinner, and I didn't have to mow my yard.

I've only had time so far to fish Seneca lake last fall. Only caught one trout. It was very windy from the south so it was very hard to control the boat. It a good thing that Conesus lake is small when you have battery problems.

I haven't been able to fish Seneca Lake yet. I'm looking forward to it, maybe this fall, or late summer I'll be able to get out there. We like to go camping in that area (state parks mostly).

If we'd been going out onto Lake Ontario, I think our trip would've ended as soon as we realized the boat wouldn't start on its own. It is a very nice and reliable boat, just a case of the "first trip gremlins" I suppose.

I hear you about the gremlin I had a few this year myself. but most of it was forgot this or that. been doing a lot of hudson river fishing this year and have worked out the bugs down there.

A friend of mine took a chartered fishing trip on the Hudson. He caught a nice Striped Bass (It was the first I'd ever heard of them), it sounded like a good time. The water is awfully polluted though isn't it?

I like the fingerlakes, because the water is cleaner. Conesus has gotten the zebra muscles recently, and they're starting to clear out the shallow weedbeds. That can't be good news for the bass fishing, or the pike.

Yes the hudson has its problems with pcb's in two years they are going to dredge the upper hudson and pull out an area that has a large concentration of pcb. Right now it is buried under silt. A lot of people keep the stripers and cook them up, I myself do not I don't trust it. It's bad enough that the goverment says to only eat one meal a month out of some lakes and streams in NY. The stripers are only in the river a short time and that's what people rationalize the eating of them by.

Those zebra muscles are a real problem but I do my part and keep my boat clean. Wed. night I will give it another try for a striper. Next weekend is going to be all booked up so I don't think I can get out then.

My wife is nursing our first baby, and we're planning on a few more, so she can't eat ANY fish out of any water with any kind of advisory on it, or else our kids could look like this [crazy]. We're playing it safe. There is no sense chancing it with something so important as the kids. Since she likes fish so much (so do I) we don't go fishing in waters that are unsafe for them. NY is great for fishing waters, it's just a shame so many of them are polluted.

Have you ever fished Black Lake in ST. Lawrence co. I've been going there every year for the past four. What a great fishery and its clean. Great camping area too but slow pace.

I've heard a little about it recently. I think I'm going to have to try it soon. How big a lake is it? Do they rent boats there? I like campgrounds with a slow pace. My wife and I set a goal to get to all of the NY State Parks before we die (hopefully long before), we've only gotten a half dozen or so down, 90 something to go. Are there any around Black Lake?

When we get ready to go I'll hit ya up for some pointers. I hear it's great for Pike, and Bass.

Good morning baitdrowner, No there arn't any state camp grounds on Black Lake. I stay at a place called Mclears http://www.mclears.com/ A very nice family camping spot right on the lake. Yes they do rent boats and motors, all the prices are on their web site. For pointers for the lake pick up a fishing hot spot map. You can get them on line or at the camp grounds. The lake is about 30 miles long. From the link I gave you there are other links there for fishing reports and info about the lake. check it out .

How odd, I was just checking out that web page the other day. I was looking for campgrounds in the Alexandria Bay area and that came up. We'll have to try it, thanks for the info.
