South Platte River - Cheesman Canyon
#1
Flow: 46cfs

Clarity: Good

Water Temperature: Mid 40’s

Major Food Organisms: Midges and baetis.

Hatches: Midges and baetis.

14 Day Forecast: Plan on technical fishing with these low flows. Midges and baetis will be the bulk of the trout’s diet for the next two weeks. Expect a few “risers” in the slow tail-outs feeding on midge adults, and lots of baetis mayflies in the afternoon between 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm. This is tough but rewarding dry fly-fishing!

Tips and Other Information: Anglers can expect low flows and technical fishing in Cheesman Canyon. There is good news…anglers who are willing to work hard will reap the benefits of some very nice trout. There are no “free-bees”, anglers must focus on sight nymphing and have precise dead drifts. Anglers are catching several nice fish (both rainbows and browns) on standard Cheesman Canyon patterns (#22 Mercury Pheasant Tails #22, Mercury Baetis #22, #22 Sparkle Wing RS II’s, #22 Barr Emergers, #22 Mercury Midges, #22-24Top Secret Midges, and #22-24 Black Beauties). The water clarity is good up to 24 inches of water. It is difficult (if not impossible) to spot trout in the deep holes. Anglers who sight-fish will be the most successful! Anglers can expect great midge hatches in the a.m. and lots of suspended, feeding fish. The fish are keying almost exclusively on midge nymphs until 12:30 pm, then the switch is subtle, and they key on baetis nymphs. There have been many feeding fish in the riffles. The most productive rig has been a #20 Mercury Midge, trailed by a #20 Sparkle Wing RS II. When the baetis come off in the afternoon (1:30), switch to a #20 Mercury Flashback Pheasant Tail, dropped with a #20 Sparkle Wing RS II. Fish 18-24 inches of riffle water and you should move a hand full of fish. The trout will be suspended in the water column voraciously feeding on may fly nymphs. The successful angler must see the trout eat the fly, because up to 35 percent of your strikes will go completely undetected! The afternoon baetis hatch has been down right impressive! Sparkle Duns and Parachute Adams have been the ticket when attempting to fool these surface risers! Look in the slow tail outs, and slack water along the edges…there are many rising fish!

Effective Patterns: #20-22 Mercury Midges, #22 Mercury Baetis, #22 Black Beauty, #20-22 Sparkle Wing RS II’s, #16 Micro San Juan Worms, #16 Nuclear Egg, #22-26 Parachute Adams, #20-22 Mathew’s Sparkle Dun, #24 Top Secret Midge, #20-24 Hi-Vis Baetis, #20-22 Matt’s Midge, #22 Cannon’s Suspender Midge, #22-24 Z-Lon Midges, #22-26 Griffith Gnats.
