Big Wood River - June 14th, 2004

FISHING: Good
The Big Wood has really turned on the last couple days. Although water levels are high, (and expected to rise a bit more this week) and wading is tricky, the fish are hungry for big dries and large nymphs.

Big Wood River
This week's weather will be warmer than last weeks, and we expect the Big Wood's waters to rise slightly this week. This should be the last of the runoff. Fishing will be as good as it gets on the Big Wood for the remaindered of June. Wading should definitely be taken seriously on the Wood right now - wade with caution and fish with a friend. Stonefly imitations are working best; size 8-12 Stimulators and size 10-12 rubber-legged Stonefly nymphs. Green Drakes will start to show, so be sure to have a selection of Green Drake dries, cripples and nymphs.

Silver Creek - June 14th, 2004

FISHING: Good
Synopsis
Silver Creek is fishing well also; windy days provide some beetle opportunities and calm periods will find good PMD and Baetis hatches. Waters are high on the Big Lost, but fish are taking large nymphs. In summary, fishing is excellent right now and crowds are minimal.

Silver Creek
You might still see a few Brown Drakes around, but this hatch is all but over. The Creek is fishing surprisingly well so far this year. Last week was windy on the Creek and beetle imitations, pheasant tail nymphs and zebra midge nymphs were working with a little chop on the water. PMD and Baetis hatches were decent during the calm periods. This week's weather outlook will improve the dry fly opportunities. Green Drakes are beginning to pop on the upper conservancy waters.

Little Wood River - June 14th, 2004

FISHING: Fair
Little Wood
The window to fish the Little Wood is coming to a close. There are a couple more weeks to fish before it gets too hot and the snakes come out. With any desert fishery, the low light times of day are the best time to fish. Fish the riffles with nymphs and/or salmon fly imitations. Fish the banks and deep water with a salmon fly imitation and move around to cover a lot of water.

FISHING: Fair
Big Lost River & Tributaries
A few have braved the high waters (440 cfs - 470 cfs) on the Big Lost below the dam and found fish with both large and small nymph patterns. Stimulators and Yellow Sally patterns should also turn some fish. These waters will be unfishable if they let more water out of the dam. The North Fork and East Fork of the Lost will be fishing better in a couple weeks when water turbulence settles down. Call the shop (726-5282) before heading over the hill and we'll give you the latest fishing and water condition information.

Box Canyon
Good fishing. This is mostly a nymphing proposition now. The Salmonflies have come and gone, although we we should start seeing a few Golden stoneflies. The best flies now are #8-10 Rubberlegs stonefly nymphs, #14-16 beadhead Copper Johns, #14-16 Prince Nymphs, etc.

Last Chance
Fair fishing. The PMD hatch is improving every day. Cold weather may slow the fishing for the next few days, but good fishing should resume early next week. The best flies now are #14-16 Spent Partridge Caddis in tan, #14-16 Emergent Sparkle Pupa, and #16-18 PMD dun and emerger imitations. Also, keep some #18 Rusty Spinners handy for morning and evening fishing.

Railroad Ranch
--Closed until June 15--

Riverside Campground to Warm River
Poor fishing. Heavy precipitation has caused the water clarity to deteriorate. As the weather warms next week, the water should clear and Caddis and Stonefly hatches should resume. Try deep nymphing with beadhead nymphs and stonefly nymph imitations.

Warm River to Ashton Reservoir
Good fishing. Good hatches of Caddis and PMD's on warmer days. Baetis are still hatching on cooler days. Beadhead nymphs and small Rubberlegs are producing well. Flavs and Green Drakes should start soon.

From Ashton Dam Downstream
Good fishing. We're seeing great hatches of Caddis, PMD's, Flavs, and Baetis. The Green Drakes will start any day now. There's lots of opportunity for dry-fly fishing. When there's no hatch, try a beadhead nymph rig, or a dry/dropper rig. Below Fall River confluence, the water is high and off-color.

Henry's Fork Tributaries
Fall River is running high and muddy. The Salmonflies have progressed several miles upstream from Chester, and the dry fly fishing should resume as the weather improves. Best bets right now are #4-6 Rubberlegs and #12-14 Beadhead Nymphs. Once it warms up again, the fish will be looking for dry Salmonfly imitations.

Warm River is clear and fishing well. Try beadhead nymphs and attractor dries.

Other small streams in the H.F. drainage are experiencing semi-runoff conditions and colored water. Check back for periodic updates.

Henry's Lake & Island Park Reservoir
A few fish are being caught at Henry's Lake. Overall, the Island Park area stillwaters have not been producing very well. It's hard to say whether the slow fishing is due to cold weather, or whether it's a residual effect from the last few years' drought conditions. As more anglers try their luck, the story may change.
