Fishing has been fair for rainbow trout in the morning hours with anglers reporting that they have been catching their limits. The fishing becomes slow by afternoon and few fish are being caught.

Aquatic weed growth is becoming a problem in the lake as it fouls hooks and makes for frustrating fishing conditions. The weed problem appears each summer as the water temperature warms.

The lake’s water level is low but fishing has been fairly good for stocked rainbow trout and small largemouth bass. The trout are biting on PowerBait and flies while bass are hitting shallow-running lures and spinners.

Boaters have been enjoying fair success for striped bass in the Boulder Basin by fishing deep with anchovies, while shore anglers have had only limited success throughout the lake.

Several boaters have told the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) that they have caught stripers in recent days toward the south end of Special Events Beach by fishing at depth with anchovies. Stripers weighing up to 6 pounds have been taken recently with anchovies near Lake Mead Marina.

Boaters who were fishing Monday (6/28/04) near the 33 Hole told NDOW that they had no trouble catching stripers that were under a pound with Sassy Shad and Shad Rap lures. There are large numbers of stripers around Pumphouse Cove, but most of the fish are small as well.

Walt deMattos, NDOW creel census clerk, said several boaters have told him that they have been seeing large numbers of bluegill around the 12 mile marker near Callville Bay. He said that some bass were caught over the weekend in the St. Thomas area of the Overton Arm by boaters who were fishing with artificial black worms, jerk baits and top water lures. Jerk baits and top water lures have taken bass from points near Callville Bay during the past week.

Fishing will get a boost in the Willow Beach area because it is scheduled to be stocked with rainbow trout on Friday (7/2/04) from Willow Beach Hatchery. The plant is expected to take place early in the morning.

NDOW creel census clerks said that boaters had mediocre success for striped bass over the weekend while fishing above Cottonwood Cove. Late last week boaters had fair luck for stripers weighing from 1 to 2½ pounds, but by the weekend the action had slowed and few fish were caught.

Fishing has been fair for rainbow trout, but fairly slow for largemouth bass, according to Dan Maes, NDOW installation specialist.

Anglers who have been fishing from boats and shore are catching trout that weigh 2 pounds or more. However, most of the fish that have appeared in the catch recently are a pound or less.

PowerBait and live worms continue to be favored by most of the anglers who are fishing from the dams at Cold Springs and Haymeadow reservoirs. Flies and small spinners will catch trout as well.

John Hutchings, NDOW biologist, said Cold Springs and Haymeadow have large numbers of black bullhead catfish and anglers may have some success for them by fishing with catfish baits near structure.

The weather has been very pleasant for fishing and camping with the highs in the 80s
and lows in the 50s.
