Surface Water And Groundwater Information Now Available Online

EDMONTON - Information on Alberta's surface and groundwater quantity is now just a mouse-click away for all Albertans.

Alberta Environment's new Water Quantity website describes the hydrologic cycle, explains how surface and groundwater is evaluated and outlines some of the things that influence the quantity of water in Alberta's environment. The Water Quantity site also features information on water allocation, licensing and apportionment agreements the province has with other jurisdictions.

The new site complements the Groundwater Information System, which contains information about individual water well drilling reports, chemical analysis reports, springs, flowing shot holes, test holes and pump tests conducted on groundwater wells across Alberta.

A commitment to knowledge and research is a key direction of the government's water strategy - Water for Life: Alberta's Strategy for Sustainability. Under this key direction, the government will:

* improve our knowledge of Alberta's water resources

* develop a better understanding of emerging water issues and opportunities

* increase awareness of water issues in Alberta

"Knowledge about the quantity of Alberta's water supply and what affects it is vital to effective water management," said Environment Minister Lorne Taylor. "This website will help Albertans make good decisions as we move forward with our Water for Life strategy."

The new Water Quantity website and Alberta's Groundwater Information System can be found at www.gov.ab.ca/env/water.

The province's water strategy is available online at www.waterforlife.gov.ab.ca.
