Big Wood River - July 28th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Good
Big Wood River
Expect this week to be one of the best fishing weeks of the summer on the Wood, as long as the rains hold off. The fish in the Wood have been given a week of rest, the water has remained at a good flow and is getting cooled off with the showers. Trico spinner falls are happening on the lower half of the river. The yellow Crane fly is still out and about in the morning. A scattering of Stoneflies still have many fish keying on big dry flies, and hoppers are beginning to take fish as well. Rusty Spinners are the fly to fish over the morning and evening rises. This fly will imitate a plethora of spent winged mayflies, (dead bug) and there are numerous small hatches of random mayflies every day on the Wood this time of year. There is still some evening caddis activity, which tends to increase as August approaches. Before lunch and after dinner remain the best times to be on the water, but anglers that cover a lot of water in the afternoon will tempt plenty of fish to their flies. Get ready, it is almost flying ant season here.

Silver Creek - July 28th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Great
The Creek has been fantastic on the upper stretches. The entire Nature Conservancy stretch is fishing well due to a plethora of insect activity. Baetis and PMD activity has intensified as well as the Trico spinner falls in the morning. With the Caddis and Callibaetis mixed in, plus the hoppers and damsels, there always seems be something to fish for. Expect more of the same this week with the Trico expected to intensify even more. Check our Tips and Tactics page on our website for a 101 on fishing the Trico Spinner fall!

The lower reaches of the Creek are less crowded and are fishing fair depending on when you go. Very early and very late caddis activity will bring up a few fish. Hoppers in the evening will draw a few strikes and there is some limited Damsel activity in the afternoon. Trico action has been hit or miss depending on what the wind is doing on the lower half of the river.

Big Lost River - July 28th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Good
Big Lost River & Tributaries
The Lost River below Mackay Reservoir has been dropping and beginning to fish better and access is easier. The morning show starts with Crane Fly activity, best imitated with an Arnold's Foam Skater. Fish this fly on the swing, but on the surface. The strikes are a lot of fun to watch. The afternoon activity consists of Yellow Sallies, some Baetis and some PMD action. The nights are caddis time. Sight nymphing the riffles is always an option on the Lost. Stimulators with droppers are a good way to search the river during the afternoons.

The headwaters waters around Copper Basin are fishing well, but like the Big Wood they are subject to dirty flows when the weather comes in. There is a good variety of insects including strong caddis, large mayflies and Trico activity. The bugs are small and the fish are keying on smaller fly patterns. Avoid the temptation to throw big attractors here and stick with Parachute Adams, Trudes, and Gulper Specials from size 16 to 14. Be extremely cautious in this area when and if the storm come in, the amount of lightning activity that can take place here is beyond words. If the sky begins to darken, call it a day.

Henry's Fork River - July 24th, 2004
supplied by: Henry's Fork Anglers
FISHING: Good
River Stage and Stream Flow [click here]

Box Canyon
Fair fishing. Flows are approaching the mid-1500's, which may have put the fishing off a little. Try beadhead Prince Nymphs, Red Copper Johns, Olive Tungsten Midges, and small Rubberlegs. Wading anglers need to excercise caution.

Last Chance & Railroad Ranch
The fishing at Harriman State Park has improved considerably. Most mornings are producing spinner falls and rising fish. We are starting to see a few Callibaetis mayflies, which should get more prominent in the next several days. Evenings we are seeing PMD and Flav spinners, as well as a few Caddis.

Riverside Campground to Warm River
Good fishing. For dry flies, try Golden Stones and Caddis. Subsurface, the best bets are beadhead nymphs (Copper John, Prince, Hare's Ear) and stonefly nymphs.

Warm River to Ashton Reservoir
Good fishing. For dry flies, fish are taking Golden Stones, Caddis, and PMD’s. Beadhead nymphs and Rubberlegs are the best bets for subsurface fishing.

From Ashton Dam Downstream
The fishing below Vernon Bridge has slowed, with most of the action occurring in the morning and evening. The main hatches now are PMD’s and Caddis. Spent Caddis and PMD imitations are important for morning and evening fishing.

Henry's Fork Tributaries
Fall River, Warm River, and Robinson Creek are clear and wadable. The fishing has been good with green Caddis Larva and Pupa imitations, Beadhead nymphs, #12 Stonefly Nymphs, and attractor dry flies.

South Fork of the Boise (Below Anderson Ranch Dam)

This is still a boat fishing dream. The river is still high enough to float with ease and fishing is beginning to pick up. There are a few stoneflies around and there have been reports of some pink alberts and a few caddis are almost always present. Nymphing through the day is the best while there should be a few hatches in the evenings consisting of pink alberts, caddis, and there are always midges.

Flies: Beadhead Pheasant Tail, 14-20, Copper Johns, 14-20, Kaufmann's Stonefly Nymph black, 4-8, Caddis Pupa, 14-18, Brassie, 16-20, Elk Hair Caddis, 14-18, Salmon Fly BLT, 4-8, Pink Alberts, 16-18, PMD Comparadun, 14-18, Stimulators, 8-14

RECORDED: [Image: hot.gif] 95 ° [Image: blackSpacer.gif] FISHING: Fair
Snake River (Below Swan Falls)

Fair

With the heat this fish has become a day to day, on and off fishery. I fished it last Wednesday and caught only two fish and then my dad went and fished it Monday and had a banner day including some big catfish and even some carp. This is the place to go if you are after several species in one stop. The water is a little off color and it is tough to sight fish so be ready to fish blind.

Flies: Crawdads, 2-4, Clowsers, 2-4, Woolly Buggers in every color, 4-8, Stayner Ducktail, 4-8

Duck Valley Stillwaters - July 20th, 2004

RECORDED: [Image: hot.gif] 89 ° [Image: blackSpacer.gif] FISHING: Fair
Duck Valley Indian Reservation

Fair

It is time to start fishing deep with the heat pushing the fish to the cooler water with more oxygen. Most reports have said that fish are being caught in the 12 to 20 foot range and fishing has slowed consideribly. One big meal for those fish is leeches and remember that leeches move pirmarily at night so give your leech patterns a try during the early morning and late evenings.

Flies: Chironomids, 10-16, Damsel Nymphs, 10-14, Dragon Fly Nymphs, 8-4, Wooly Buggers in black, brown and olive, 8-2, Stayner Ducktail, 10-8, Duck Valley Surprise, 12-8, Mohair Leeches, 8-10

RECORDED: [Image: sun.gif] 85 ° [Image: blackSpacer.gif] FISHING: Good
Warm Lake

Fair

The evenings are the best tiem to fish this gorgeous lake. There have been reports of good midge hatches in the evenings and the fish are really keyed in on them. During the day I would fish deep with leech, damsel, and dragon fly imitations. Also don't forget that jsut around the corner from there is Tule lake. This is a trophy fishery that has some big trout in it. The hatchews and bugs should be the same for this lake.

Flies: Parachute midges, 16-20, Adams, 14-18, Scuds in grey and olive, 10-14, Chironomids, 12-18, Woolly Buggers in brown, black, olive and white, 8-12, Mohair Leech in brown and olive, 8-12, Sheep Creek, 10-12, Damsels, 10-14
