The hazy, lazy days of summer are upon us and the trout are deep to escape the heat. The hot afternoons are driving the trout into deeper water where the water is cooler and holds more oxygen. If you have a thermometer and can find the depth where the water cools dramatically, chances are you will find trout just below that depth. Early morning appears to be the best for trout in most areas. If you are practicing catch and release early mornings are a must as the hot surface water temps in late afternoons stress the fish enough that they don’t survive even if released. This time of year there isn't’t much change from week to week as far as fishing conditions go.
[#990033]ANGEL LAKE[/#990033]
Fishing has been fair to good. Brook and rainbow trout are in good shape and with a little work, limits are being filled. Worms and rainbow PowerBait work well. Small spinners and rooster tails are also favorites in just about any color. Movement seems to mean more than the color. Water levels are good here.
[#990033]CRITTENDON RESERVOIR[/#990033]
Crittenden is now open to the public for fishing. Water levels are good, but the fishing is just fair. Again target trout in the morning. Artificial lures and flies only at this water and please carry out any trash you bring in.
[#990033]DORESY RESERVOIR[/#990033]
Fishing is pretty much done here for the summer as the lake is almost dry.
[#990033]JIGGS / ZUNINO RESERVOIR[/#990033]
There is still water and fish at Jiggs and some of the fish are approaching 14 inches in length. Anglers will want to hit this lake early in the morning while fish are feeding before the heat kicks in. Worms and PowerBait have worked well here as they do in most of our reservoirs. Please keep all the fish you catch up to the legal limit as a fish die-off is expected.
[#990033]MOUNTAIN STREAMS & LAKES[/#990033]
This is the time of year to hit the mountain streams. The only problem is the last few years of drought have kept the production and growth of the fish to a minimum, so that streams that aren’t stocked regularly may not be producing many fish right now. Some streams to try would be Lamoille Creek, Tabor Creek, Bruneau River and Jack Creek. Overland Lake has an abundance of brook trout that are hitting on just about every cast. This is a beautiful lake with great views. If in good shape this could be a day trip, but if you want to relax and enjoy the scenery, it is a fairly easy three and a half to four hour hike from the trailhead in Ruby Valley.
[#990033]RUBY LAKE NWR[/#990033]
The springheads appear to be putting out a fairly good flow and water levels now are slightly higher than at this time last year. Bass fishing is finally starting to pick up a little though afternoon storms are wreaking havoc with boaters. The best time for bass appears that last hour before dark, so take a good flashlight and a spare to help find the markers on your way out. Fishing from the dikes has been moderately successful when it is too rough to head out in a boat. Rubber worms in dark colors such as purple, black and root beer with a little sparkle work well. Black bear hair streamers work well for both bass and trout, as well as wooly buggers, leeches and damsel fly patterns are popular.
[#990033]SOUTH FORK RESERVOIR[/#990033]
Water levels are still good and the fishing ranges from fair to good. Trout measuring 18 to 22 inches are being caught off of the dam using worms and just letting the boat drift. These large fish are suspended between 20 and 30 feet deep. Bass are hitting topwater lures fished slowly late in the evening after the wind dies down..You can now keep one black bass 15 inches in length or longer. With recent weather trends, boating has been shaky in the afternoons due to high winds, though the last couple of days haven’t been as bad as earlier this week and last week. Please proceed with caution and wear your PFD. Remember, it pays to wear your life jacket.
[#990000]WILDHORSE RESERVOIR[/#990000]
The boat ramp is now out of the water and fishing is fair to good for perch, though many anglers are complaining of small fish. Target deep water for the larger fish and don’t stay in one spot long if you aren’t catching keeper-sized perch. Trout fishing is fair, with most of the trout being caught early morning or late evening. No recent reports of catfish being caught. Bass fishing is pretty good. Target structure and rocky points that continue out from shore under water. Please be careful of rocks under water with the low water levels. One boater reported that they got to an area, where they had to get out of their boat and manhandle it back to deeper water, so if you have a car topper that you can launch by hand, be careful of underwater rocks and shoals.
[#990000]WILSON RESERVOIR[/#990000]
Good water levels though fishing is just fair. However, it has been hard to judge the fishing since this lake is getting very little pressure. The trout are deep here, so try the fishing the area by the dam. Generally mornings are good here this time of year for both shore and boat anglers. Worms and fluorescent Power Bait work well as does dark wooly buggers and rapalas.
