EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.
FRENCHMAN LAKE: Still the place to catch fish. Nymph patterns fished with a type two sinking line near drop-offs have been best. Look for places where deeper water is nearby. Mornings and evenings have been the best time to go. Wiggin’s Trading Post (530) 993-4683.

WILDHORSE: Lake fishing was slow this week, however, the river below the dam has been good as has the Bruneau River. Low pressure has adversely affects the lake fishing. The locals are spotting some good bucks, both antelope and mules. Wildhorse Resort, 758-6471 or www.dunnwildhorseresort.com.

SACRAMENTO RIVER: Salmon fishing is improving with more salmon in he area and a decrease in river flows (12,500 c.f.s). Boats are averaging one-to-four fish per day. Lure anglers using K-15/K-16 sardine wrapped Kwikfish are catching some fish, but roe anglers are having better success. Trout fishing in the Redding area is excellent. For drifters the best bet is a Quickie with roe or use crickets. Fly anglers are continuing to do well with a variety of nymph patterns. There is a good dry fly bite in the early morning and late evenings.
Guide services and information: Hank Mautz Professional Guide Service, (800) 355-3113. Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Kirk Portocarrero, (800) 670-4448 or (530) 221-6151. Web site: www.sacriverguide.com.

TRUCKEE RIVER: Fishing remains good despite the heat. The section from Tahoe City to Boca bridge is low and clear. There have been reports of good evening dry fly fishing with tan caddis patterns in size 16 and 18. Morning nymphing in the larger pools and pocket water has also been producing. Try beatis nymphs as well as small pheasant tail nymphs in size 16 and 18. The section below Boca bridge has much more water in it right now due to release of water from Boca reservoir. The cold water coming out of Boca has had a positive effect on the stretch below where it flows into the Truckee. Streamers have been the ticket here. Rabbit strip streamers have been best. Early morning short line nymphing with small bead head nymphs have been producing well. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559. The Gilly, 358-6113.

LITTLE TRUCKEE: Flows and fishing remain good. Nymphing with real small nymphs have been best. Try midges, baetis nymphs and anything else you might have in sizes 18 to 24. Try fishing these under a hopper instead of an indicator to not spook fish that are seeing a lot of anglers and flies on a daily basis. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474 or the Web site at www.renoflyshop.com.

EAST WALKER RIVER: Flows remain excellent for this time of year. The only issue is the heat. The water temperature usually reaches the lower 70s during the day and can stress the fish. Take a thermometer and when the water reaches 70 degrees quit for the day. Early mornings have been best. Try the hopper dropper set up with small bead head nymphs. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474 or the Web site at www.renoflyshop.com.

EAST CARSON RIVER: Flows are holding at 70 c.f.s. Hoppers, beetles and ants have been working mid day. Nymphing has also been decent in the mornings. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474 or the Web site at www.renoflyshop.com.

LAKE DAVIS: The fish are deep now. Early mornings are the time to go. Use a fast sinking line and fish in 8 to 15 feet of water with olive Stillwater patterns. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474 or the Web site at www.renoflyshop.com.

BOCA, POSSER AND STAMPEDE: The smallmouth fishing has been tremendous. The rocky areas around the dams have seen good smallmouth bass take a fly willingly. Burk’s aggravator nymphs have been working well with a sinking line. Crayfish patterns are also worth a try. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559. Keith Kerrigan, Sierra Anglers, (530) 582-5689.

GOODRICH CREEK: Hopper fishing remains excellent. There was an eight-pound rainbow caught last weekend. The evenings have also been productive. There has been a small mayfly hatch as the sun goes down. Parachute Adams in size 20 and 22 and elk hair caddis in the same sizes are catching fish. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474 or the Web site at www.renoflyshop.com.

SMITH CREEK RANCH: Fishing remains excellent. The elevation (6600 ft.) is a good place to avoid the heat. Fish are being caught on all sorts of techniques. Indicator nymphing with midge patterns has been the top producer. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474 or the Web site at www.renoflyshop.com.

WINNEMUCCA RANCH: The water is pretty warm. Mornings have been best before the sun has a chance to warm the water up. Try big streamer patterns fished with 3x tippet. There are some real line busters in there right now. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474 or the Web site at www.renoflyshop.com.
