Live Bait Fishing 09/26
#1
Sunday, 09/26- Hit the water early (5:15am). Headed for Las Vegas Wash to try and scratch up some live shad. Things did'nt look so good, no surface movement found in the small coves we looked in. Before we began tossing the net we noticed a nice boil near the Gypsum Wash. Birds were diving, stripers were splashing, it was a classic boil. Off we went. We pulled in a couple of small stripers before it ended. Next, we quickly headed into a small cove off of Gypsum Wash. It was heavy with shad. Lots of surface activity! Capt. Don filled the live wells with half a dozen throws. Our best luck with shad this season. We started our drifts near the green channel marker near Hole 33. The slight breeze pushed us back toward Las Vegas Wash. The bite would be steady for a while and then taper off for a while and then get steady again. We made four drifts. Capt. Don, his buddy Al and I caught 6 or 7 fish each. We released a lot of small ones. We were back at the ramp by 11:00 am. We did'nt get the hot action we always hope for but we had an enjoyable time. I took home a bag of shad to freeze for use at a later date.
I talked to an angler who was preparing to lanch while we were leaving. He told me that he has had no trouble netting live shad in the afternoons. I guess I'll have to give afternoon/evening fishing a try sometime soon.
