Took my boy out this afternoon to exercise the little perchies at Pineview. We landed 28 total from shore using nightcrawlers on a #6 snelled hook. 13 for me and 15 for my boy. Every cast produced bites which lead to a small perch battle. All fish were released back into the water safely to grow up for another day. Man these fish are small, I have lure's bigger than they are. I wonder if this means they will be making their comeback. I have ice fished Pineview over the years and they seem to have dropped in size and number. I remember reading a post about this very subject a while back.

Smallies were our target species to start but those little buggers would hit on everything we threw out there. Our jigs and lures were too large for them but they still attacked with a vengence. So why fight it, go with whats hitting and downsize to accomodate.
It is always great to go fishing with my kid!!

Is that the narrows? I fished the narrows extensively last fall and never even saw a perch. I did run into a school of gills on one trip. I wonder if they are planters.

A couple hundred yards from the dam in about 15-20 feet of water. I would guess by the size that they are planters.

I seriously doubt that they plant perch in Pineview. It is a good sign that you caught so many small perch, it looks like they are making a come back.

the dwr does not plant any perch in any fishery in this state as i was told this year.

I don't mean to be argumentative, but didn't they plant perch in Yuba to provide a forage base for the walleye? I thought I'd read that somewhere.

[cool]They didn't really "plant" perch in Yuba so to speak, but what they did was had a bunch of fishermen participate in catching a bunch of perch at Jordanell, then the DWR collected them, then they transported them to Yuba, so they could start reproducing faster than rabbits (like they do), and that is all they've done with the perch there, and that was last fall I believe. They did plant a bunch of Rainbows in there to give fishermen something to catch and take home if they want, while they get the perchies back up to a large population to support walleye that they will introduce in a few years. You can't take the perch home that you catch there, but the rainbows you can, and some of them should be getting up to a decent size about now!

[cool]That would be nice, Kent, if they didn't have to plant any Walleye in there. It would save some money on the DWR budget. I was just going off of what I've read of DWR reports in articles from past outdoor sections of the local papers.
However they do it, I hope that someday Yuba can get back to what it once was when people like TubeDude talk about the 10 pounders they used to catch in there, and the Northern Pike to. I really hope it gets back to that in say, 5-10 years. Wouldn't that be cool!!

Those are some big perch. If I hit Yuba can I expect to see perch this size? Better question, are there still perch that size in there or have they all been stunted like most I have caught this year?

[cool]Man, I can't wait until that lake gets back in good shape. That will become my new favorite ice fishing lake when that happens!! As CBR observed, those are some MONSTER perch. Lotsa meat on them critters! And, in that Walleye-Perch photo at the bottom, is that also a Trout I see amongst all of those spiny fishies?

So you ready to go on a perch hunt? I get back from Las Vegas on Saturday. We should watch the forecast and find an opening and plan a perch hunt. Maybe after Nov's Flotilla?

Whatever you decide I am game. I am done with Jordanelle for the year unless someone can talk me into fishing thru ice. I know about the big perch in Rockport. Caught some nice ones there last trip.

[/size]When I was duck hunting the river going into Yuba Res. I came across a dead walleye that was about 18 inches long. It looked like the recent floods washed it to shore and it died there. Then I later found a pool in a flood plain area that had some fish in it. It looked like some carp and some smaller fish. I also believe I seen a pike about 2 feet long hideing under some tumble weed. The pool was pretty deep so I couldn't see the bottom. I think that the river probably has other pools like this. I didn't have fishing gear to try to catch anything. I think that the walleye and pike will come back very fast. That is if the small fry can survive the perch hordes.
