Anglers who were fishing at the White Pine County lake over the weekend told NDOW that the fishing was somewhat slow, but the fish that were taken were around 19 to 20 inches. Fish are being caught in deep water near the dam and in the channel between the upper and lower lakes. Sparkle PowerBait, worms and marshmallows are catching the fish while the favorite fly has been the flashback hare’s ear nymph.
Pete Gill from Nevada State Parks said that a weather front came through the area and the rain has kept anglers away. Fishing pressure has been very light but a few stocked rainbow trout that measured 11 inches were taken from the shore and dock. PowerBait and night crawlers were the bait of choice.
The rainy weather prevailed for most of the week and kept anglers away. No fish were creeled this week.
Boaters have Smiles on their faces as they continue to enjoy good fishing for striped bass while those who are fishing from shore are only able to catch an occasional striper or channel catfish, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).
On a positive note, NDOW creel census clerks have noticed an improvement in the body condition of stripers that are coming from Las Vegas Wash. In recent weeks many of the stripers coming from that part of the lake were skinny.
Boaters continue to have success in that part of the lake for fish that weigh from 1 to 2 pounds. However, they are having trouble finding shad for use as bait because the recent rains have made for murky water conditions, and it is now difficult to locate the bait fish.
A pair of boaters who were fishing Monday (10/25/04) in the Boulder Basin told NDOW they caught numerous stripers by fishing close to shore around Hemenway Harbor and Special Events Beach. They caught the fish by casting Swimming Shad and Sassy Shad lures.
Anglers who were fishing in the Overton Arm over the weekend had fairly slow success. Only limited success for stripers came from Stewart’s Point, Fish Island and St. Thomas.
Walt deMattos, NDOW creel census clerk, said that anglers told him that they caught and released small largemouth and smallmouth bass over the weekend while fishing for stripers at the tires at Echo Bay Marina. They said that some of the fish were taken with anchovies.
NDOW will begin its annual rainbow trout plants at Lake Mead on Tuesday, Nov. 23. Plants will take place at Hemenway, Horsepower, Pumphouse and North Saddle coves.
Small stripers continue to be caught on the Arizona side of the lake from Owl’s Point to the narrows above Cottonwood Cove. Drifting anchovies and squid has been the preferred method for catching the fish. Most of the fish have been running from 8 ounces to 1 pound.
Fishing was difficult following last week’s rainbow trout plant at Willow Beach because of low water level. The fish were stocked from the dock because that was the only area that the stocking truck could access the water.
The access road to Willow Beach suffered flood damage during last week’s storm. Anglers heading to Willow Beach should avoid driving on the road during rains because of the possibility of being caught in flood conditions.
Dana Johnson, Area Installation Manager, said that cooler weather has dropped the surface water temperatures into the low 50s and that has increased trout activity substantially.
The best fishing results are coming from Cold Springs and Haymeadows reservoirs with anglers catching a few rainbow trout that exceeded 18 inches, but the majority was the recently stocked 11 inch trout.
Anglers and hunters are advised that access around the area is good on the main gravel roads, but can get very slippery off of it.
[#990033]URBAN PONDS[/#990033]
Anglers reportedsporadic success following the final NDOW channel catfish stocking for the year. Anglers fishing Lorenzi Park, Sunset Park, and Floyd Lamb State Park in Las Vegas and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City landed fish with an assortment of bait. Trout plants are scheduled to begin at the park ponds on Tuesday, Nov. 23.
Chris Crookshanks, NDOW biologist, said the fishing has been hot and the temperatures have been cold at reservoirs in the Ely area.
Over the weekend, Crookshanks checked a number of anglers who were enjoying good fishing for recently planted rainbow trout as well as hold over fish at Comins Lake south of Ely. Wooly buggers and small nymphs along with PowerBait and nightcrawlers are catching the fish.
Similar fishing is being found at Illipah Reservoir east of Ely, although most of the success is for planter trout. Recently stocked rainbows are being caught at Cave Lake southeast of Ely.
The first snowfall of the year hit Ely this week. Temperatures have been dipping to the freezing level at night.
