[size 2] [font "comic sans ms"] Headed out this morning for a few hours. Took the float tube out and launched around 6:15. The wind wasn't too bad maybe 10mph from the north. The fish finder is very much on the blink, now it won't read deeper than 30'. Didn't mark but one fish and didn't catch anything but had fun trying. Maybe next time, who knows.

[size 2] [font "comic sans ms"] Oh yeah, a side note for those interested. There wasn't any shore access at Upper Gypsum Wash. They bulldozed a trench across the road.

Access reduction just pushes my buttons. Leave it to the Gov't to further restrict access! Remind me what those entrance fees were going to buy again?
I fail to see why the park service can't install a launch area at Gov't Wash. All you'd need are a couple days of grading, some yards of gravel and a temporary dock to tie to. Wouldn't have to be paved and could come with appropriate cautions. But probably too much paperwork and $$ and no concession means just big headache for them.
Look for more public service reductions and cutback on enforcement as well as Bush administration trims back Interior Department appropriations in next fiscal period.
OK, putting the soapbox back in the closet.

PS - maybe battery connections are clean and tight and settings are at default or tranducer angle need attention on the depthfinder. If that isn't the problem, could be crystal in transducer or processors. Lowrance has exchange program - look on their website. Don't know about other makers.
Troubleshoot by running in simulation mode to verify electronics. If transducer angle down when you're in water and still getting short readings then cracked crystal in transducer maybe? Transducer problem would show as interference on screen also.

[size 2] [font "comic sans ms"] Thanks for the ideas on the Smartcast. The transducer is a free floating device so angle doesn't play in the grand scheme of things. The battery is just a larger version of a watch battery.
