Oregon Fisheries Update

November 19th – November 25th, 2004

Fisheries Update: The Guide's Forecast - volume 6 issue number 20 Northwest Oregon's most complete and accurate fishing forecast

Forecasting for the fishing week of November 19th – November 25th, 2004

Fisheries Update: Fall Chinook fishing on Tillamook Bay is underway! Don't go without the knowledge you need to pursue Oregon's largest strain of salmon. Get tech report #7 which details the Tillamook Bay fishery or tech report #16 which details how to catch these fish on bobbers from our secured web site. These reports and several more are available at: http://www.theguidesforecast.com/techrpt.shtml.

Sturgeon fishing continues to be the “go-to” fishery on the Columbia. The season remains open Thursdays through Saturdays and the effort is lighter than one might think. The keepers have been on the larger side and there are still some oversize fish being caught.

The steelhead fishing that is usually starting to really heat up near John Day is not materializing this season. The best action remains in the John Day Arm and it is looking like it won't be a banner year on that system this year.

Crabbing is still great in the Astoria area and will likely stay that way until the commercial pots go in around mid-December.

Tillamook fishing has slowed somewhat but tidewater of the Wilson remain great! The Nestucca fished good last weekend but has also slowed. The predicted rainfall will certainly have a positive impact if it does indeed materialize. It could stimulate some great weekend action if river levels rise as much as they are predicted to. RECENT UPDATE: The rain did NOT materialize as another failed weather prediction comes to light. The rivers will remain low and clear and bobber fishing tidewater will remain the best option.

Tillamook Bay itself has slowed and the ocean as well as any targeted chum salmon fishing closed on the 15th. Crabbing is slow but sturgeon are rumored to have moved in the bay in decent numbers.

The coho fishery at Siltcoos Lake will close Friday, November 19th as the quota of 600 wild fish has closed. Tahkenitch Lake will remain open for wild coho and fishing is good. It is expected to fill the quota by the end of the month.

Coho are being taken in the mainstem Umpqua River. Steelhead, coho and chinook are available in the Rogue. All South coast streams could use some rain and the shower forecast for today, 11/18 probably won't help much.

Crabbing is good in most bays with favorable reports coming in this week from Netarts, Newport and Waldport.

Clackamas and Sandy Rivers have little to offer anglers at this time. Winter steelhead runs will change this situation. See The Guide's Forecast next week for more on the best options for Thanksgiving Day steelheading.

There's not much happening in the lower Willamette with winter steelhead numbers very low and sturgeon fishing poor.

No trout stocking has occurred this week

Due to the holiday next week, TGF will arrive a day early. Look for it on Wednesday, November 24th.

Soapbox Update:
Please join me!

The Northwest Sportfishing Industry Association has benefited our NW fisheries more than most anglers will ever know. Help me show appreciation for their efforts by purchasing a seat at the winter fundraiser event at the Wilsonville Holiday Inn. Email me, Bob Rees at brees@pacifier.com if you are interested in joining me. Great, cheap auction items will be available that make awesome Christmas gifts! You will meet some great people and be supporting your sportfishing opportunities by attending.

AND a note from NSIA's executive director:
We still have room for your generous donations. Do you have access to a vacation destination? Too many airline miles? A print that you have run out of wall space for? Two of the hottest items in the incredibly successful Washington Banquet this weekend were landscaping and a goose hunting trip. Be creative and generous, and we'll dedicate it back to your successful bottom line!
