Anyone out there know if Mantua still has safe ice? I am planning on going somewhere Christmas eve and Mantua is the closest at this point. Thanks in advance.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

The question is Does Mantua still have fish? I was up there both Saturday, and Sunday and didn't see alot of action. May change a bit the first of the Year when we can use bait....But not much action this weekend.[unsure]

Thanks for the info Bigfreeze. I have never fished Mantua and was wondering where would be a good place to start out. I am hoping to target the bluegill and perch.

There are perch in Mantua, illegally planted. I caught a few 8 inchers this year. It should be decent come Jan 1, when the bait restrictions are lifted.

Thanks for the quick response. This is better than a telephone. Do you think there are different size classes and enough to make it worth the trip? [reply]

I'm not sure how many year classes there are in there. They've only been in there a few years, so I sort of doubt that there are too many monsters.
I'm sure there are lots of perch, since they apparently breed like rabbits.
I plan to hit it after the 1st, and hopefully I can give you a good report, but until then I'd just be guessing.
Good luck when you go out.

Thanks again for your help. Living in Evanston, I don't know all the spots. Echo doesn't look good. I fished it 3 or 4 times this last summer and could not find the perch. I may go try it in the morning just to see if I can get lucky.

I had a lot of luck at Echo last winter, but only fished it once after ice out, mainly because I don't like paying for access to a lake if I can help it, and carrying a pontoon down a steep bank isn't my idea of fun.
I'm going to give Echo another try this winter. I'm still waiting on a report of safe ice though.

It was 3 inches last Sunday on the north end so it should be safe. I had a few good trips on it last winter also but could not buy a perch in the summer.

I'll have to check it out next week. I have the whole week off, and I'm planning on spending quite a bit of it on ice somewhere.

[cool]Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Mantua the only other place besides Jordanelle where you can keep 50 Perch? Wish you could keep that many at Rockport![unsure]

They changed Pineview to 50 a couple years back. Wish you could catch that many up there!
