DEP Announces Winter Trout Stocking
It?s mid-January and the chill of winter is finally bearing down upon our lakes and ponds setting the stage for that wonderful wintertime activity called ice fishing! In anticipation of this winter freeze, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) last week stocked nearly 14,500 trout into fourteen Connecticut lakes.

[DEP Technician Releasing Brown Trout] DEP Inland Fisheries Technician James Bender with one of the large broodstock Seeforellen strain brown trout released this winter into Black Pond, (Middlefield/Meriden).

Among the recently stocked trout (January 10 & 11) are 452 Seeforellen-strain broodstock brown trout from the Kensington State Fish Hatchery that were released into eleven lakes scattered throughout the state. ?These trout are spawned at the hatchery in the late fall and are stocked in the winter to provide additional opportunities for ice anglers to catch a large trout,? said Ed Parker, Chief of DEP?s Bureau of Natural Resources.

The broodstock Seeforellen strain brown trout released this winter generally weighed between 2 and 5 pounds each, with some up to 8 pounds. In eastern Connecticut, Beach Pond (Voluntown), Black Pond (Middlefield/Meriden), Crystal Lake (Ellington), Mashapaug Lake (Union) and Quonnipaug Lake (Guilford) each received 50 fish. In western Connecticut, West Hill Pond (New Hartford/Barkhamsted), Mt. Tom Pond (Morris/Litchfield/Washington) and Tyler Lake (Goshen) were stocked with 50 Seeforellen each, and another 50 were split between Mohawk Pond (Cornwall/Goshen) and Stillwater Pond (Torrington).

In addition to the Seeforellen strain brown trout, 14,000 catchable size rainbow trout from the Quinebaug State Fish Hatchery were stocked into eight eastern Connecticut lakes. ?These rainbow were stocked to alleviate crowding in some of our hatchery ponds and are an added bonus for winter anglers,? explained DEP Fisheries Technician Chris McDowell. ?Due to concerns about winter driving conditions, they were released into popular ice fishing lakes that are near the hatchery,? said McDowell. The water bodies stocked and numbers of rainbow trout released are:
Amos Lake (Preston)700 Coventry Lake (Coventry) 1,400
Beach Pond (Voluntown) 2,100 Crystal Lake (Ellington) 2,800
Bigelow Pond (Union) 700 Gardner Lake (Salem) 2,800
Black Pond (Middlefield/Meriden) 1,400 Mashapaug Lake (Union) 2,100

DEP reminds winter anglers that SAFETY COMES FIRST. Be aware that ice thickness varies on all water bodies due to a number of environmental factors including in-lake water circulatory patterns. Please check the ice carefully before venturing out and check repeatedly to make sure that ice thickness is sufficient.

Anglers are also reminded that it is a New Year and 2005 fishing and hunting licenses are now available and can be purchased at town halls, bait and tackle shops, and many stores that sell outdoor sporting equipment. The DEP also advises anglers to check fishing regulations in their new 2005 Connecticut Angler?s Guide. Guides are available from Town Clerks, many bait & tackle stores, or by contacting the DEP Inland Fisheries Division (860-424-FISH). The Angler?s Guide can also be accessed on the DEP web site at: http://www.dep.state.ct.us/burnatr/fishi...hinfo2.htm

Well you couldn't tell by me Dave, as I never did get one through the ice. Looks like the state is going in the right direction, and no Dave Gov. Rell is not going to move your way soon. We do have some discussions going on about getting more of the money for the gas and tackle tax for the ramps and maybe stocking. But as with everyone else the budget is tight. But at least the powers are starting to listen to the outdoorsmen and what we want. Theres allways hope.
