With the cold spell in early January, most of our reservoirs have safe ice on part or all of the lake. Travel conditions to some of the outlying waters such as Crittenden or Wilson Reservoirs are poor and 4WD or snowmobiles may be required.
Please obey all rules of ice safety.
Here are the generally accepted thicknesses of ice for various activities: [ul] [li]1 inch of ice – not safe; [li]2 inches of ice – one person on foot under good conditions; [li]3 inches of ice – group in single file or spread out; [li]4 inches of ice – general use; [li]5 to 6 inches of ice – snowmobile. [li]NDOW doesn’t recommend taking cars or trucks on the ice. [li]The recommended thickness is for good clear ice, not for ice with slush on top. Also, realize that ice conditions and thickness can vary on the lake and that thickness and conditions can change quickly with the weather. [/li][/ul]
[#990033]CRITTENDEN RESERVOIR[/#990033]
The road here is in poor shape and last weekend was snowmobile travel only. Ice is 6 to 7 inches and fishing is fair to good using a jig. No bait is allowed on this water, artificials only and trout must be at least 17 inches long to keep.

[#990033]DORSEY RESERVOIR[/#990033]

Travel not recommended.
[#990033]RUBY LAKE NWR[/#990033]
Ice is 11 inches thick with fishing conditions slow to fair. However, the collection ditch is open and around 500 brood fish averaging around two pounds have been planted in the collection ditch.
[#990033]SOUTH FORK RESERVOIR[/#990033]
This lake is completely ice covered except for a small opening in the middle that the waterfowl are keeping open. Ice around most edges is between 4 and 9 inches thick. Where the ice changes from white to gray, the thickness changes abruptly and the gray ice is not safe. Best fishing appears to be in the vicinity of the state park boat ramp with several fish in the 3 to 5 lb range being caught on both worms and power bait. Fishing has been fairly good and the average size is between 12 and 15 inches.
[#990000]WILDHORSE RESERVOIR[/#990000]
The ice is 15 inches thick and fishing for trout has been fair to good while fishing for perch has been slow to fair. Most perch are small, though anglers who are willing to move and drill lots of holes until they find larger perch can find them in the 8 to 10 inch range. Worms and PowerBait are working best for trout while jigs tipped with a worm fished about a foot below a flasher appears to be the best rig for perch. The best area for trout appears to be by the tribal boat ramp while perch are where you find them. Trout are being caught about 4 to 6 feet beneath the ice while perch are found just off the bottom in 10 to 20 feet of water.
[#990000]WILSON RESERVOIR[/#990000]
Seven inches of ice and the road is 4WD only. The few anglers venturing here report just fair conditions with trout in the 11 to 13 inch size.
WHITE PINE COUNTY
Comins Lake: Ice is approximately 8 to 12 inches thick and nice trout are being using white or yellow crappie jigs tipped with worms. The best action is at the south end of the lake.
Cave Lake: The ice conditions are also around 12 inches of good ice and trout are being caught here on a regular basis. Most of the fish are 10 to 12 inches and are being caught using power bait or worms, with worms doing the best. Approximately 2000 fish were caught at the ice fishing tournament on Saturday, Jan 29. Many of the limits were caught during the first hour of the derby. Plenty of fish were planted this summer and fall in Cave Lake so there should be plenty remaining.
