Killing the Kings: SW FL Fishbuster Dave
#1
[cool]We fished MAY Reef and Estero Bay Monday with Jack Kaye. Using shrimp and shiners, anchored just inside the low-tide scum line, about 2 1/2 miles off Big Carlos Pass, we released lots of Spanish mackerel to 24 inches, small kingfish to 15 inches, snapper, and gag grouper. We caught a nice mangrove snapper bayside, on a big shiner, and we were broken off a few times by big fish, just south of the Lovers' Key condos, after the tide came in. We noticed an abundance of Spanish mackerel just outside New Pass to the south. Fishing Wednesday with Walt & Louise Shanaman, we caught a nice 38 inch cobia, mangrove snapper to 15 inches, triggerfish, porkfish, and grunts. The action was good until the porpoise showed up--It's a good idea to turn off your sonar as soon as you find your spot, to delay being found by the porpoise. Thursday, the Gregg Faulkner party fished with us 8-17 miles off the Registry Resort. Using a few shrimp, but mostly big shiners, we had good success with king mackerel, landing eleven of them to 35 inches, 8-9 miles offshore. We continued to the 17-mile ledge, where we got some nice yellowtail and mangrove snapper to 16 inches, white porgies, and triggerfish to 3 lbs. We released red and gag grouper to 19 inches. Going after the kingfish Saturday, the Gregg Bedell party caught two big kings to 30 lbs. and 49 inches, along with some Spanish mackerel. We were anchored, using live and commercial chum, then free-lining big shiners on 12# test with Tyger leader. Find complete info and fish photo album at www.fishbustercharters.com
