The Excitement of Your First Sailfish!!
#1
Sunday (2/13) Eileen Clark and Faye Naylor fished a half day with Faye's first sailfish as our goal. On a previous trip, Faye had a sail on briefly and unfortunately the 12# line broken on the bottom of the boat. The morning started off with just enough wind from the NW to fly a kite. The wind soon died off and with it keeping the kite up was an impossible task. With 3 flatlines and 1 downrigger line, we continued our slow drift toward the SE. The bow flatline took off and Faye was hooked to an unknown fish that didn't want to cooperate very much and was fighting deep. We made several trips from the bow to the stern and then 2 other flatlines took off. Eileen fought one and the other was left in a rod holder. Faye's fish finally gave up and it turned out to be a very large bonito. The other two lines crossed each other and Eileen's line broke. Meanwhile, Faye fought the other fish to the boat and it too was a bonito.

The wind switched to the E/ESE and picked up. With the flatlines out, we were now able to fly the kite. While Faye was napping, Eileen and I watched several dolphin chasing flying fish and they very quickly found our kite baits. Faye was up in a flash and they both fought dolphin in the 8# class. When the excitement was over, we had 3 dolphin in the box.

The next set was uneventful till we moved slowly back out to deeper water. The slow trolled flatline got hit and cut off by a toothy critter. The drift back in saw no action.

There was enough time for one more set. Once again I slowly worked back out to deeper water. At 110', the long kite bait took off and Faye did everything like a seasoned pro. Several minutes later, the sail finally showed itself and put on a spectacular aerial display that had everyone hooping and hollering. The sail was determined to get away, however, Faye was more determined to catch and release it. The fish made several erratic moves, but Faye handled it each time. After what seemed like a very long time, we got the catch. The fish was still full of energy and took off on another run that ended in several leaps. A second time on the leader and once again it took off. The third time was the charm and the 7 foot plus sail finally was ready to pose for a few photos and after being released, took off with a shot.

One of the joys of charter fishing is helping people catch their first fish regardless of what the species might be. To see the joy and enthusiasm on an angler's face and to know that you helped them accomplish a goal is such a great reward. Faye's excitement lasted the entire trip back to Spinnaker Marina and continued until they left the parking lot on their way back to Ft. Myers. That evening she sent me an email and was still excited. CONGRATULATIONS Faye, I'll let you in on a secret. Every sail you catch in the future will be just as exciting!!
