CAVE LAKE
More than 400 anglers were at the White Pine County lake on Saturday (1/29/05) for the annual ice fishing tournament and most had good luck catching stocked rainbow trout.
The participants managed to catch a dozen of the 25 tagged trout, but none caught the tagged fish that would have netted a $10,000 prize. Live worms and crappie jigs tipped with night crawlers caught most of the fish. Currently the ice is 10 to 12 inches thick.

COMINS LAKE
Fishing is slowing and will continue to get slower the longer ice stays on the lake, according to Chris Crookshanks, NDOW biologist. Even so, anglers are catching trout through ice that is 8 to 10 inches thick. Live worms hooked on yellow and white crappie jigs are the best bait for catching the fish.
[#990033]EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR [/#990033]
Peter Gill of the Nevada Division of State Parks said there is now only a small amount of ice on the lake. A pair of anglers who were fishing from the fishing dock on Valentine’s Day had good luck as they each managed to catch their limits of 5 rainbow trout in less than an hour. They took the fish with live worms.
Two weeks ago an angler caught a 23½-inch, 4½-pound German brown trout in the river below the spillway. Brown trout are also found in the lake.
[#990033]ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR[/#990033]
The lake’s water level is high due to recent storm runoff, although the water is murky. A pair of anglers who were fishing off the dam over the weekend caught two rainbow trout with live worms.
[#990033]LAKE MEAD[/#990033]
Fishing continues to be fair for striped bass in the Boulder Basin and Overton Arm while the action for largemouth bass appears to be showing some signs of life. Rainbow trout are being caught following the plants that are conducted weekly by the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).
Stripers have been caught during the past week from North Saddle Cove to Sand Island by boaters who are fishing with anchovies. Shore anglers have had some success for stripers at the fishing dock and Hemenway Harbor, although the action has been relatively slow.
Stripers weighing well under a pound were caught over the weekend at the tires at Echo Bay and Overton Beach marinas. The fish have been taking cut anchovies at those locations.
Anglers who were fishing for largemouth bass over the weekend in the Overton Arm had some success, although they had to put in quite a bit of effort to catch the fish. Bass were taken at Fish Island and St. Thomas.
The water level has risen enough recently to allow boaters to return to the Virgin River area, although extreme caution is required to get into that part of the lake. No fish have been caught recently in the Virgin Bowl.
An angler who was fishing near the old launch ramp at Las Vegas Wash on Monday (2/14/05) caught at 3½-pound largemouth bass with a popper.
NDOW is scheduled to stock rainbow trout Friday (2/18/05) at Hemenway, Horsepower, North Saddle and Pumphouse coves.
[#990033]LAKE MOHAVE[/#990033]
Anglers continue to avoid the lake because of the slow fishing that has been found recently. About the only consistent success has been coming from Willow Beach where anglers have had fair luck for rainbow trout following the weekly plants.
Willow Beach Hatchery will stock trout Friday (2/18/05) at Willow Beach while NDOW will plant rainbows the same day at Aztec Wash.
[#990033]WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA[/#990033]
Lakes on the area are free of ice, and fishing has been fair for planter rainbow trout as well as fish that are 17 to18 inches.
Adams-McGill, Cold Springs and Haymeadow reservoirs are all producing the recent planters and a few fish up to 2 pounds. Over the weekend, anglers who were fishing from the dam at Cold Springs had fair success for the fall planters.
The campground and roads on the area are muddy because of recent storms. More rain is expected on the area this week.
[#990033]URBAN PONDS[/#990033]
Rainbow trout will be stocked on Friday (2/18/05) at Floyd Lamb, Lorenzi and Sunset Parks in Las Vegas and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City.
