I hit Lake of the woods in N. MN on Sat. rode snowmobile out to 16 Mile and had a blast.
for five of us we brought home 20 walleye (14-17"), 18 Sauger (13-15" with one 16.5"), 10 perch (all btwn 11-12")
We caught close to 150 fish, most were walleyes. We caught a few in the low 20" range as well.

that is some pretty good action,
I am still looking for my first good bite of the winter. Again I jerked the line to soon and pulled the jig right out of a pikes mouth...

Dave, pull out your quick strike rig and a small sucker minnow (12 inches). That'll get him. Of course, them cirlce hooks are nice for helping catch them little guys also.

ya know you are absolutely right, that is what I should be using, them blood circle and treble hooks.
they didnt have them when I went to restock the begining of last feb, and got side tracked and came home with an artic cat. (think I spent just a little bit more than I had planned)

We were fishing on about 33" of ice, almost neede an extension for the auger. The tricky thing is, you need to take the time to get the fish to turn its head up the hole on this much ice.
Dave, where do you hook the bait? I always hook it behind the dorsel fin but instead of going all the way through the bait, try putting the hook just under the skin and point the hook towards the head of the bait parallel with the spine.

Sat there was about 8" of hard pack, but with the temps it turned into slush. If your on an established road and with the colder weather of late, you should be OK, even off the roads. Bring some ice cleats for your boots, the snow may now be ice.

lol, I pulled a caboose just this morning [shocked] the conditions you speak of exist here in the mitten.
had to lay there a second and take invintory of all my digets to make sure they were all in working order [sly]
I dreampt about a good bite fore I got out of bed this morning as well, I dreampt that my tip up flag went off and I lifted my tip up out of the hole and looked down the hole and saw my nemissess chewing on my shiner, and he took one look at me and took off running with my shiner still in his mouth, and I gave a big yerk then pulled him up though the hole, but that is when the balogna sandwich I ate last night started kicking in, as I was taking a picture of him for the ice fishing contest my pike started evolving in to a 4 legged critter with dinasaur type skin with plad embortering on it...
I guess you could call it National Lampoon's Pike [laugh]

Yep,, anytime the fish are large and the ice is thick it can be a pain to get their heads started up the tube..
