Trip W/ Leaky
#1
Went out to Blue Lake on Friday afternoon. Got there and started fishing right away. We got into some fish, bass and bluegills after a short while. I think we both wound up catching a good number the first day. I caught mine on soft plastics, which I threw pretty much all weekend. Leaky was fishing with some ice gear that he brought but I'll let him expound on that if he wishes. I found my heavy socks in the bottom of my bag when I got home so thanks for the loan of your extras while we were there Leaky. [Wink] Anyway, we set up the tent in a gusting wind and got right to the fishing so it was fun. I stayed in my tube, intending to fish all night long and caught three fish on my painted topwaters before the wind and cold blew me off the water. I wasn't going to mention this but I guess I better so that Leaky doesn't give me a hard time.... Poor guy was wading around the bank, stepped in a hole and fell over, dousing himself, his waders and most of his clothes underneath. I saw him walking along the bank, and when I looked around again, he had disappeared.... under water, I found out later. BUMMER!!! So, when I wimped out and went back to the truck, he and Sparky were pretty much settled in for the night. Guess the "trip" wasn't so good for him after all.[cool] The second day, I loaned him and extra shirt and my extra sweatshirt so he could go out and fish in dry clothes. The fishing wasn't too hot in the morning so we started experimenting with different tactics and eventually we hooked into fish throwing plastic minnow baits. We wound up rigging them on a jighead, Leaky bouncing his back and me just working them the way I normally would. Leaky busted out the tube and his ice gear again and hooked up some more. After about one, I was done... I couldn't buy a bite. I guess the fish were all or mostly suspended so we were lucky to catch the number that we did....what can we say, Leaky and I are just good like that. [Wink] Just kidding. I'm sure luck played its part. We finally became disenchanted with the 30 some odd people that showed up and created a diver hatch on the water and wound up leaving at around three. Leaky, I had a great time, you are quite the fisherman, and it was a pleasure to take the trip with you and Sparky. I have tons of pics from the lake and the trip but I have to get them resized before I can post them. Anyway, there is your report Leaky, hope its good enough.

What can I say,
River pretty much said it all pretty well. The only thing I can think of to add was that we knew they were most all suspending because I was using my Cuda 168 and as TubeDude indicated in the past, suspending fish are tough to catch. Also I was using my normal ice fishing set up, a Forage minnow ice fly and wax worm. Also caught a few on my pulse worm. I might add, he exagerates when he talks about my fishing ability but it was sure a bummer to get wet just as the sun was going down. [shocked] I took off the wet clothes and got in my sleeping bag, had another coat and a pair of sweets to use. As you would guess, the clothes didn't dry out over night.[unsure]
We did each catch a 16-17 in bass which made the day for each of us on Sat.[Smile] I will add, River is a gentleman and a great guy to be with.

Aw thanks... you're too kind. Ruining the bad reputation I've been working on for so long.... [pirate] Just kidding. I had a great time and I can't wait till we get to hit Pelican or Lake X for some more bassin experiences. Hope that Lake X lives up to the rep I've built for it with you.... We just gotta find the right spots again. Maybe hit Deer Creek too this summer. We'll have to start making some of our annuals together... Uinta's, Pelican, whatever. I definitely had a good time... Hope I talked enough this time too... I remember that was a condition after my twelve word afternoon on the river. [cool] I will admit, I was frustrated with the wind and the divers.... I just don't do distractions very well. There at the end, I was just about to start dragging the biggest, nastiest lure I had because the divers seemed to just be swarming and of course they were all in the "fishy" spots.

kentofins,
Actually with a wax worm it worked pretty good. With that set up I was able to catch both blues and largies. If I wanted to target just largies I would go to what River uses.

Good to hear you guys made it out there. I was wondering with the weather that came in. Glad to hear you even ripped a few lips while you were there, too. I hate them holes out there! I've seen my dad and uncle slip into them quite a few times. I've done it myself. It certainly ain't that much fun. Them scuba divers suck, too. They totally screw up the water. Talk to ya later.
